I often wonder if my dog is bored or that I am not entertaining her enough. Perhaps I am being an over paranoid pet owner but what do your dogs do all day? My lab is quite happy to entertain herself but most of the time during the day she sleeps she is always happy to go on her walks though. But could she be depressed or something. Is it normal for dogs to sleep away the day?

Phobebe sleeps all day.
Willis sleeps periodically - inbetween thinking its funny to pinch things off my desk and run off with them, open the window to bark at delivery men (who have subsequent heart attacks), open every door in the house to look for stuff to chew and stalk to guniea pig.

If there's nothing they'd prefer to do, yes. Generally they don't initiate activity, but are more than happy to join you in whatever you're doing. If you're pottering about in one room they tend to settle down until you go somewhere else ...
:)
my dog sleeps most of the time too, he only wakes to eat and go on his walks and play....some days he'l have a mad half hour in the evening but more often than not he asleep on the sofa. i don't think its anything to worry about, if she were not interested in walks or food or play then i would be a little concerned but i see no reason to worry.

Hi Goat, no it is not unusual or uncommon for your Lab to sleep most of the day. I have a multi Lab household, but in between the mad chaotic playtimes, which only last for short periods, they sleep. If I move around they lift their heads, just in case, but then happily lay back down again, when leads or food are not on offer. If your dog was depressed or bored she would be showing other signs, ie: aggitation, destruction of furniture etc. If all else is normal with her don't worry.
I've got three border collies and the last thing they want to do is sleep! :p They are on the go all day and if nothing is going on, they will make something happen! It's during those moments my mum has been known to mutter, 'oh why didn't you get a labrador?!' I wouldn't swap them for anything though. lol
I think it depends on the breed, if she seems happy then I wouldn't worry. If one of my collies slept all day I would know he was ill but I know people with GSDs and such like and they sleep a lot more and that's normal for them.
My dog sleeps most of the time too, thats if she is not pinching shoes or fluffy things. She always settles by me when i am doing decorating, which is quiet a lot because i am always finding something to decorate :)
I am a diy freak. She loves her walks though, but i take to far somtimes. I just tell people who make a fuss to watch the slobber :) i now carry a towel as well as poo bags and water lol.

Mine gets up at 05:00 and draws my bath whilst preparing a light breakfast of freshly squeezed papaya juice, home made muesli followed by organic smoked salmon and scrambled quails eggs.
After which my clothes are pressed along with my newspaper and my car seat prewarmed after a quick polish of the exterior.
A packed lunch of Guatemalan crushed pine nuts mixed in with fresh spinach leaves followed by a peeled grape is placed in my glove box and a cup of Jamaican blue mountain coffee is placed in my hands just prior to my leaving home.
On my return, the house has been vacuumed, polished, dusted, washing done, ironed and aired and the aroma of scented candles mixes in with the bouquet of a previously opened Cabernet Sauvignon to wash away the cares of the day.
We then go out for a 10 mile run and on our return the dog rustles up a simple repast of hand made frittatas followed by a pavlova whilst I refresh myself in my power shower.

Henry my lab doesn't sleep all day. He's always on the go. He sleeps at night then when we do. He's always up for a walk or a play or he just entertains himself in the day.

my beardies only seem to fall asleep after 9.30 they are on the go all day long running around the garden, playing with thier balls, chasing each other, rolling around, digging holes, tormenting the cats well actually cats tormenting dogs!!! we go to the park ,Training 3 times a week ,ten minutes training at home each day. Evening groom and then sleep dont see them much after that till the morning.

Our two Labs are on the go all day even after there daily two hour walk, maybe sleep for half an hour, they are snoring like two pigs now and sleep till 8 am .
Sheila.

Unless a walk is in the offing or mealtimes mine sleep and chew bones all day, have the odd rough and tumble first thing and often about tea time, other than that they take zzz's. Dogs life :D :D

It depends on their ages ;) - my mature dogs settle down after their walks and mostly snooze or flop around from room to room sighing deeply as I move around- my youngsters have regular dashes round the dog yard leaving a trail of toys etc behind them, or bounce from sofa to sofa pausing only to leap up at me if I dare to move from my chair ( I don't mind as I know that they will calm down when they finally grow up) - this is interspersed with 'flat out' sleeping sessions. They all live for their walks and training sessions and all get very excited when these are due. :D
