OUR LAB PUPPY HAS BEEN ON AND OFF HIS FOOD SINCE WE GOT HIM AT 8 WEEKS OLD. HE HAD BEEN EATING BETA WHILST WITH THE BREEDER, BUT BUT A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER WE COLLECTED HIM HE HAD VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA AND WASN'T EATING. AFTER A TRIP TO THE VETS HE WAS HAVING CANIN ID PRESCRIPTION FOOD. THE DIARRHOEA TOOK A WHILE TO STOP BUT AFTER THAT HE SEEMED MUCH BETTER AND WE SWITCHED HIM TO JAMES WELLBELOVED COMPLETE FOOD. WE'D HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS UNTIL A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WHEN HE DIDN'T REALLY EAT ALL DAY AND HAD DIARRHOEA AGAIN (NOT AS BAD), THEN THE NEXT DAY HE WAS SICK. IT IS NOW DAY THREE AND HE STILL HASN'T EATEN MUCH. HE SEEMS OK IN HIMSELF, STILL MYSCHIEVIOUS, IF A LITTLE QUITER THAN USUAL.
CAN ANYONE OFFER ANY SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM, IT'S REALLY WORRYING ME AS I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT LABS WERE VERY GOOD EATERS.
Hi
Sorry to hear your pup is ill (can you use lower case as it is easier to read and all uppercase is "shouting" in netiquette terms).
You do not say how old your pup is now, is he old enough to be teething? Pups often seem to get upset stomachs within the first few days after leaving their breeder - much is due to the excitement, change of water and titbits and routine.
Pups (and adults) can also be loose if they eat too much as the food does not have chance to be fully digested on its way though. As he is also vomiting I would take another trip to the vet but this time keep him on the same food with no titbits for at least a few weeks to give his gut chance to stabilise.
Thanks for your reply. He is 11 weeks old now. We have just taken him back to the vets tonight and we now have to collect poo samples for three days, they will be tested to see if he needs atibiotics. If they come back clear they said he could just have a sensitive stomach. He's not dehydrated and his temperature is fine so that's good. We have been told to give him canin id prescription tinned food, just small amounts. He's just eating a little bit so hopefully he will be ok.
