Hello,

I met one of these beautiful dogs in the Cotswolds last week.  It had similarities in it's coat and colour to a German Pointer which my parents have alway kept which is probably why he appealed so much.  He seemed to be very relaxed and friendly, however I'm not too up on the temprament and wondered if anyone knows about them please.

I currently have a cheeky BT who just loves to jump up and lick big dog's mouths for several minutes at a time (some like it, some hate it!)  they got on well for the few minutes we met, but wondered if the Spinone has the relaxed temprement to put up with a bit of mithering from a smaller dog on a full time basis.  If they are extremely gentle or don't have a big sense of humour I'm not sure it would be fair to unleash a BT on them!

thanks for looking.

Yes they are fab dogs , intend to have one myself oneday. They are a big soft gentle dog, with a loverly clown like nature. Dont think a boisterous BT will faze it. They do need lots of exersice and can be quite distructive if they are bored. But there are Spinone owners on this board that might give you a bit more info.

Hi Guest,

If you put 'Italian Spinone breed profile' into a search engine (not on CD, try Wannado, or MSN), you will come up with a few different sites.

With the Spinones predisposition to dribble and drool everywhere, it sounds like every Spin owner should have a BT to clean up the Spin before it drools everywhere <G>

Awh but you can forgive anything when they look at you with the Spinone expression Bit like a Beardie gazing lovingly at you after rolling in horses Poop

Hi Guest,

I've got two Spinoni.  In addition to a search on the web, you could also do a search on this forum for Spinone and you will find previous discussions on the breed :)  They are a fantastic breed to own, if you are suited to their foibles :D  They have a combination of characteristics, gentle and clown like certainly, but also out and out HPR's with all the characteristics that can go with that ;)  They are extremely intelligent, can be as fly as a cart load of monkeys and can be extremely stubborn when it suits them :)  Firm, fair and consistent training is required from the get go as the teenage years can be traumatic and you need to have a very sound foundation to avoid having a hooligan on your hands!  Also, as Moonmaiden says, you can forgive them anything with the expression - but most of us that own them try not to! They're not daft and can play on their charms to get out of trouble! They also have a sensitive side to their nature and plenty of socialisation is a must to prevent shyness developing.

They do get on with other breeds, as they are very sociable, both with other dogs and their humans.  A nicely brought up Spin wouldn't be in the least bit fazed by a small dog around - my older one in particular absolutely adores small dogs and puppies :)  But they do drool, oh yes indeed, they drool!  Some drool more than others, but you must be prepared to live with great gobs of it hanging from your ceilings.  You'll also need to develop the duck which prevents you getting it in the eye when they shake their heads!  Best thing is to train a "chops" command and dry the beard after drinks and when they're slobbering :D

Hope this helps in your decision as to whether to have one, and if you do get one - ENJOY :)

Just like a Beardie!  And even worse, if you have a witness to the crime who doesn't understand the cunning nature of the chancer dog in question, you get the "aw, how can you resist that face"!  The answer is "easily, I've had plenty of practice!", whilst the dog says "hah!  A sucker!  I'll lay it on even thicker"!  :D
