Hi everyone, I need the benefit of your experience and wisdom please.

Our new standard schnauzer puppy, Ludo, has been brought home, he's 8 weeks old today.  My two and a half year old dog is understandably having just a few teething problems with him.

One thing is Poppys possessivness over her 'stuff'.  She's always been guarded over things that she's 'hidden' (usually on the floor in full view with a bit of towel draped artfully over it) but god forbid if Lubo accidentally stumbles across one.  She actually goes for him.  We are now having to remove all of her goods.  However, Lubo has a plastic Nylabone and a furry tiger and we need to keep these out as these are things we use to deflect his nasty sharp teeth in his little fighting moments.  So much as we are trying to make sure that Poppy is included and happy and not feeling left out its already swaying in the puppys favour.  He's always on at her, biting her underbelly and trying to climb on top of her and humping her and really, shes managing quite well. And he's constantly trying to eat her food.   They are absolutely nowhere near the day when they can be left alone together.

I know its only been a week and that things will get better but is there anything I can do to ease the process.  *sobs*  Am exhausted as he gets up so early!

hi jodenice
Have you tried a crate where pup can go for quiet time and poppy can have her toys back for a little while.
I have a 22m and a 20wk and the older girl didnt like pup touching her toys so I put everything away and just gave pup her chews in the crate and ellie her toys when pup was away, and gradually began to allow a little more play... time together but don' t use raggers or any other  pull toys at this time as that can cause a little agression it took a week or so for pup to be accepted Ellie would walk away or grumble at pup at first but suddenly she realised this was a play pal and would allow her to sleep next to her and then on top of her!! now they are inseperable although Ellie has grabbed her when she has been getting to bossy but a word from me and they are fine remember always to back the top dog when they decided between themselves who it is.In my house its the 15yr old collie!!!!

you can pm me if you like anytime

Hi no I haven't tried a crate, I've never used one.  We've only got a small flat and I got one of the homes for puppys, you know, almost like a little furry kennel, he hates it.  I've tried keeping them in separate rooms so they get a bit of peace from one another and often take Poppy to the garden on her own.  If I try the separate rooms though they both howl!  I thought about some type of playpen thing but it seems as if  they are fascinated with each other and don't really seem to want to be apart.  How does a crate work?

Its not so much that Poppy even needs to chew, she just loves to bury things and keep 'guard' over them.  I can take things away no problem its more that she's wary of the puppy 'creeping' towards her hidden item.  I'm thinking of buying another Nylabone until they are both able to have chewies - I'm not even sure what puppies are allowed and when they are allowed it.  Do you know?

(As I speak they are both curled up like commas around each other, its times like this that make it all worthwhile!)
