my mum has  got a cavalier king charles puppy which is 14 weeks old and has just found out off the vet  she has  a umbilical hernia but not to worry too much only if she cries out alot and then he may operate, but we have just found out her litter mate has one too can you please tell us if this is hereditary   or just pure fluke that two pups both have it.

Diden't the breeder inform you of this condition when you purchased the puppy, if i was you i would contact your breeder and find a new vet. why dont you join the forum i'm sure you have lots of questions and there's loads of people on here who will be willing to give you good advice.
it can be hereditary in some breeds

Ipiniona vary and a lot depends on whether it is a true hernia or a late closure of the area where the blood vessels and the umbilibal cord entered the body.

this link should be helpful http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/umbilical.html

If it is small and closed it is unlikley to cause a problem.
