i have rung a breeder who has just had a litter of two chihuahua puppies.as they are only 2 weeks old she doesnt know if they will be smooth or long coated.the father is  rough-longcoated and the mother is smooth.what is the probability of one of the puppies being a smooth coat?
and is it 6 or 8 weeks when they leave there mothers.

I think I'm right in saying that the two coats of chihuahuas are different breeds and shouldn't be crossbred or the KC won't register them? I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have will confirm or correct me! :)

I have a book written by an experienced chihuahua breeder who says that you can tell if a pup is going to be smooth- or long-coated (this was in the days when the two coats could be mixed, which is why you still get either in the same litter) almost as soon as the whelp is dry, because a long-coat will have a ridge of hair along the back of its neck down past the withers.

As for age, many toy breeders don't home their pups till they're about 12 weeks because they're so very tiny and fragile.

crossing of the coat types isn't alowed in the uk from what I know, these pups can't be kc registered. There are occurances of long coat puppies being born to smooth coated parents due to a recessive gene but that is it. The long and smooth coated varieties are viewed as separate breeds by the KC. I personally would not buy from this person and I wonder what price they are asking £1000+ perhaps. To me this sounds like a backyard breeder out for a quick buck due to chi's being so much in demand. They leave the mother no younger than 8 weeks due to their size. I'd ask the breeder why she has bred these puppies to begin with? I also recommend you read up on chi's if you are serious about getting one, get on a respectable breeders waiting list, read all you can. I found "living with a chihuahua" by margaret Greening, I found it one of the most informative books when I got Nemo and it has chi's doing flyball ;)
