I may be getting a pup soon from a bitch that was mated to a dog in Germany.  Both bitch & dog have good hip scores but the dog was not haemophillia tested.  I was told that this was not uncommon in Germany as there are so few cases.  Can anyone tell me if this is usual.
Also can someone tell me at what age can you tell if any of the pups will be long haired, if both parents are normal coats.
thanks

My friend who breeds GSDs in Germany not only used Haemophillia screened dogs but they have to be DNA profiled as well, the dogs in germany are not scored for HD but are assessed  & the best given aa "A"stamp

As to LC sorry never had any in the litters we bred, but someone who has had LCs could alwyas yell within the first few weeks, but she has been breeding for a long time

The GERMAN SV breeding system requires that all breeding stock are tattood, have A Stamp Normal Hips, are DNA checked, have a BH/AD/Sch 1 or IPO 1 and are conformation tested to a min G preferably KKll or better still KK l.

One of the reasons I bought a puppy from an imported in whelp bitch.

The tests are far more rigourous than those here where one can breed any old bitch with any old stud (if one wished)

Thanks for the reply's.
I am getting a bit concerned.  The stud dog in Germany has A standard hips and a 'breedworth' under 100.Aparently this is a figure based on ancestors, and under 100 is very good.  I still don't understand this properly.
I am getting the impression that people who know about breeding ( obviously not me ), would not get one of these pups, just incase.
I apologise for my ignorance but I am just trying to get as much info as I can to get a nice healthy, happy pup.

Since there is hardly a shortage of GSDs in the world, or for that matter in the UK, there is no reason to buy a pup that comes from breeding stock that has not been rigourously tested and proved is there?

If the stud dog is in Germany, he would have to have all the basic breeding requirements stated above, if he has A normal hips and a breedworth(Zuchwert) below 100 then I dont understand why you are worried so much, I would rather trust a German stud dog than a UK bred one, I put my dogs through the German breeding system and can assure you that this is a rigourous system and tattoo and DNA has to be checked at every stage.
Provided the female has basic breeding criteria(hips etc) then there shouldnt be anymore of a problem(less in fact) than most litters bred from UK stock. Sorry if this sounds like generalisation but I know the German system inside out if anyone has any questions they want answering about this.
