I would think they are marking their territory.  My sisters dogs do this if they go away for the weekend and their son looks after the dogs the first chance they get the little monkeys go and cock their legs up all round my sisters bed. :-)   We had a toy poodle once that wasn't allowed upstairs and if she got to the stairs she would always wee on the 3rd stair.   Our dog did this just before Christmas when I had a plumber look at the shower upstairs, he came upstairs and promptly cocked his leg on my bedroom door because a strange man was upstairs.

My bitches do it, too. Especially if I go away for any reason. I've just had to learn to make sure that the door is very firmly closed. I live in a bungalow, so I can't stop them going upstairs  ;) I used to do this before. :)

My dog has done this before. Only happened on the bed. Now its the first thing we say "Have you closed the bedroom door?". :-)
