Hi - can anyone help me?  We are picking up our lab puppy next week and someone has just rather worried us. Our 6 week old lab has blue eyes. Is this OK - will the colour change? Is this a sign of anything else?  Our vet will check him over and the breeder says all OK but just wanted to get some feedback before we really fall in love with him!  Thanks for any replies.

What makes you think this is a troll post??
Most if not all, brown eyed, puppies are born with dark blue eyes. They do change to brown as they get to a few weeks old though. I would have thought they would be changing by now, but someone else is sure to come along with more experience and tell you.

There is another post on this already to which I have replied.

How bright is the blue? And what colour is the lab - black, yellow or chocolate? I've never seen an adult lab with blue eyes (though no doubt it's possible), but pigmentation takes time to develop. If the blue is a dark slate-grey I wouldn't be too bothered because that seems to always darken to brown.

Edit: Silly me , I've just noticed the pup's yellow!

As others have already said, the eyes start off blue and changes to brown in the first few weeks.  If the pigment is light, they may look quite pale blue or green.

If they are really bright blue then it could be that they are true blue and will remain so, but unless you are planning on showing or breeding, it's nothing to worry about, at least not healthwise.

Blue eye that occurs in association with lack of pigment (all over white, white patches or merle) is connected with eye and ear deformities but there is another type of blue eye which seems to be inherited independently of coat colour, seen in Siberian Huskies and other breeds.  No matter how pale the yellow is, your pup will have pigment so if he has true blue eyes, this is the type they will be.

There are no known associated health problems with this type of blue eye.  There is though the possibilty that dogs with blue or wall eye MAY have slightly impaired night vision (compared to brown eyed dogs) as the tapetum, which functions to double the light reflection in the eye, is sometimes absent.  Nothing to be concerned about though, as dogs have superb night vision compared to ours :-)
