I have one!  Hasn't had his hips done, but he don't limp.  No eye checks either, but he can see ok.  Lovely GOLDEN colour.  Brill pedigree, as long as your arm.  Sound ok? :D

Ok, just to give you the benefit of doubt, has your girl had all relevant health checks with good results? If so, then go back to the breeder of your girl and hopefully they should be able to point you in the right direction for a compatible stud dog.

As well as what Sharon has wriiten, are you prepared for:

10+ puppies, not everything to go to plan with the whelping, you will need to take time off of work as she may whelp early or late, she may need a Caesarian, you may need to hand rear some/all the pups.   Some  may die on you or not survive birth, can you cope with that?

If it's a big litter weaning will have to start early - 2 weeks - and after that you'll never take your hand out of your pocket because they eat like nothing on earth as well as mum needing 3 times her usual amount.   Then there's the cost of a stud fee, the hip & eye testing, KC registrations (£12 per pup), a KC affix if you apply for one, vet bedding, whelping box etc.

The disruption to your household - they poop and pee for Britain, the destruction to your garden, stopping one puppy doing something is hard enough when it's 12....give up!

That's just the start of it....maybe buying in one is easier and leave someone else to do the hardwork?????

I'm afraid it takes more to finding a suitable stud than being of the correct breed and colour. After getting satisfactory results from her  health tests you need  to research her pedigree and find a male that compliments this. You must also ensure that she is of good enough breed quality to have a litter....after all you really wouldn't to add to all the poorly bred labs out there would you.
If your bitch came from a reputable breeder then they should be your first port of call as they will know her pedigree and will be able to advise you.If she wasn't from a knowledgeable breeder then I suggest you spend the next 6-12 months doing your research.Good luck
Also....you may think a small point but believe me the lab people won't...labs don't come in 'GOLDEN' ....only chocolate' black and YELLOW

Sorry to sound harsh but if you don't even know the correct colour how can you possibly know enough to breed.  If your labrador is from a reputable breeder then that would be the place to start (although no reputable breeder would refer to their labs as golden), if not the chances are she's not a good enough example to breed from anyway. There are far too many labs being bred and rescues are overflowing.

Donna if you have read the replies thus far you may be reeling with shock at the negativity of responses.

THIS IS NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE HERE ARE ELITIST OR MEAN.  Sadly Labradors are the most exploited breed, with more of them registered at the Kennel Club than all the other breeds put together and MOST ARE NOT BRED WITH THE GOOD OF THE BREED IN MIND.

Rescues are simply overflowing with lovely dogs bred and bought on a whim.

The only reason to even contemplate adding to the 44000 plus bred each year is if your bitch has such exceptional qualities that it would be almost a crime not to breed from her for the good of the breed.

If she were thus exceptional she would be a show winner or excellent working bitch, and frankly you wouldn't be needing to ask the question as you would be deeply involved with the show or working Labrador world, and would know exactly where you wanted to go for a stud to hopefully produce even better pups than both parents :D

You may have been totally innocent to the huge welfare implications in considering breeding from your bitch.

Why not continue to post and join your breed club to learn more about Labradors.  You may even wish to join one of your local Labrador welfare/rescue groups as an outlet for your wish to be around the breed and finding loving homes for them.  It is heartbreaking but rewarding work.  They need volunteers to home check, foster dogs etc. :D

Thank you all for saying what I should have said, but you have put it much more pleasantly than I ever could :)

I felt exactly the same as you Kayc. If it was not for the bitch to go through so much.  It would do some of these people good to pay for all the healthchecks journey to the stud dog, stud fee, scans, caesarian with only one pup.  Not musch profit there? I think some people see pound notes all the way.
- By megaloo [es] Date 16.04.05 20:47 UTC
Very well said Brainless.  Yses it would do many people good to work for a Labrador Rescue to see just how many thre are that need rehoming.  Some because of peoples change in circumstances, but others because they see an Andrex puppy, or Chocolate now they are becoming popular and people cannot cope becuae they have not researched the breed.

Hi Brainless, wish all would be breeders had at least as much brain as you do. I'm a bit of a novice on the message board, maily because of the stupidity of people in general that I can't tolerate. But have found this log of messages refressingly reassuring. At last someone/ones who care, who know the stakes and the consequences. I just couldn't beleive my eyes and my ears how ignorant people are. And are they blind too? They fail to notice the desperation of overflowing resque homes. The sufferings of the innocent animals whose hopes of finding a new home decreses with each new born pup. Only for them to be end up too in one of these shelters.
