just a quick question. if a breeder has pick of the litter what happens if there are no pups? just wondering!

She/he doesn't get pick of litter :D :D I expect that they would wait for the next litter

Hi do you mean pick of the litter instead of the stud fee? If so this should really have been discussed and agreed upon before the mating took place.

i'm only asking. it was something i thought about last nite. i have mated my girl but we payed a stud fee, i was just wondering what would happen.thats all!

I would have thought that if you paid full stud fee, if the stud owner wanted a pup, then they would not be entitled to pick of the litter and would be expected to pay for pup.

It would depend what was agreed but it could be a return mating and wait for pup or it could be a stud fee for the service if the bitches owner decides not to use same stud dog again or not to breed again and thats why its  best thats it's  agreed before hand as various difficulties could arise if things didn't go according to plan. It can also be difficult if only one puppy is born as that will obviously be the pick. :) .

Hi if you have paid for the stud fee well i would say the stud dog owner cant claim pick of litter. Unless you got your girl on breeding terms from the stud dogs owner and this was discussed at the time good luck

You pay a stud fee OR pick of litter. If there is no pups the usual arrangement is that there is no 'payment' since there are no pups to chose from. Some people will agree that if this happens a small 'service' fee is paid for time taken etc during the mating.
A stud dog owner benefits from a pick of litter fee in one of 2 ways...
1/ he gets a pup from a bitch he particualrly admires and has 1st choice
2/in some breeds a pup will sell for much more than the price of a stud fee and hence he will benefit more financially

as i have said i did pay a stud fee. my question was only hypothetical. just wondered if we went and did it the other way by stud dog owner having pick of litter, what would happen if there was no pups at the end of it. i didn't get my girl on breeding terms
many thanx

As I said usually there is no fee if there are no pups. Some people arrange to pay a small 'service' fee.

thanx archer for your reply. i see what you mean. is the service fee a % of what the stud fee was?

I beleive it is just a small amount for the inconvenience of the stud owner...the amount would depend on the individual agreement but 99% of the time if the bitch doesn't take theres no cost to the bitch owner at all
