Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / feeding liver?
- By Guest [gb] Date 13.04.05 19:44 UTC
I have a labrador dog. I am wondering whether it is safe to feed him with liver? My friend regularly makes  liver treats by liquidising raw liver, 2 eggs & garlic, mixing with flour to make a bun consistency & popping it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Her dogs seem to love this treat but I often hear liver isn't good to give to a dog?

Hi Guest, yes it is perfectly ok for a dog to be fed raw liver (in moderation) too much can cause loose poo's.  My lot get raw liver one day a week, and also kidneys etc.  The mixture you have given is the recipe for Liver Cake, which is much healthier and tastier as a training treat than shop bought products.

Liver is very high in VitA among others things, which is a fat soluble vitamin, meaning it is stored in the body. Too much VitA causes toxicity,it should make up no more than 5% of the the daily feeding.
Once or twice a week is fine :)

Can i ask why this poster is called "a possible troll" ? :(

Hi Frodo, All visitors questions have this above the op's post.  Just recently there has been an influx of questions, which on the surface have been placed simply to cause unrest and the debates have got rather heated. Rather than remove the visitors questions, as most are genuine, admin has placed this as a reminder. Simply use your own common sense in deciding whether the op is troll or genuine. If you think the op is a troll, simply do not reply in any form. In this case a reasonable question asked so would assume genuine.

Hope that helps :)

Liver is EXCELLENT for dogs, just as it is for humans.  It is a valuable source of Vitamins and Minerals :Vit A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Cobalamin, Folic Acid, Biotin. Zinc, Sulphur, Copper, Iron, Selenium, Cobalt, Molybdenum.

Liver has a laxative effect so not too much, I feed my dogs liver approximately once a week; you can feed it raw or cooked.
