There are no rules :D Having learned to lap puppy milk I wean mine on dried puppy food pureed smooth with warm water, initially with lactol added, gradually reducing the water until feeding dry by about 6 weeks old.
I wean puppies staright onto the food they would have later on, in your case, royal canin. As Isabel says, soak the food in hot/boiling water, allow to cool and then mash it/blend it to a consistancy that suits the pups. If they are still lapping, make it nice and runny to start, slowly decreasing the amount of water over the next couple of weeks until they are eventually eating it without soaking it at all. Don't be too keen to get them on dry food though, it doesn't matter if they go off to their new homes still having it soaked a little. Different pups come in in dfferent ways. I have sent some litters off on dry and some on soaked. They will go off eating if you rush them. HTH

My pup was weaned straight on to raw............
But the same principal applies, mushy to start, increasing to more solid food :)
