Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / tuna in a dogs diet !
- By SALLYD Date 13.04.05 14:27 UTC
My 5 year old female has alwys been a fussy eater, and sometimes lacks much appetite.
She had a litter of puppies 4 weeks ago .When she was pregnant I tried mixing her Royal Canine food with tinned dog food to get her to eat more but she hated it .She likes some minced chicken + beef mixed in but by fluke got tuna once and loved it.Since then she will eat as much r/canine meal with tuna as i will give her. She still feeds her 6 big puppies full time and looks great .
Is tinned tuna in oil ok in the long term mixed with r/canine meal ,.
Regards Sally,Mallorca
Ps her coat is shinier than ever

I feed both of mine tuna in either sunflower oil or springwater as an occasional treat, not sure if it's ok to give them all the time but would be surprised if you couldn't/shouldn't.  Use the search facility and type tuna and I'm sure you'll get a wealth of information from previous posts and other people who suffer with fussy eaters (definately not applicable to my 2 :D

I think due to the mercury levels in Tuna it is not wise to feed it all the time

Pilchards/sardines/mackeral have all the Omega 3s which can be absent from tuna and are very good for dogs joints and brain! :D

I feed tuna, mackeral or sardines (sardines are cheap from Lidl) either in oil or in tomato :) Fresh sardines and mackeral we get from Tesco sometimes too :D

I like them fresh when I can find them at a good price.

I dont think my boys would eat fresh fish, Fagan found a dead fish by the canal the other day and rolled on it

Do you feed the bones too ? (or is that a silly question  )

Feed the whole thing, head, tail bones and all.

Not ALL dogs get on with fresh fish, some reacquaint themselves with it; not very lovely indoors....................... :D

My lot didn't look twice at the fresh fish I got for them.  However a crow and a seagull enjoyed their free lunch that they stole from the backgarden before I could offer them to the cats.. :D

I feed them whole too ..the first time, Delta heard they were good for her coat so took hers outside and rolled over it, several times :D :D Then she ate it :)

We get them from Tesco when they are on the reduced shelf, quite often there are several there at any one time, usually reduced to about 60p so I buy them and put them in the freezer until I need them
