My Jack Russell puppy is obsessed with eating these little black slugs, also these horrible little grub like things that resemble a caterpillar without legs and worms and occasional snail.
As soon as the ground is damp and they come to the surface he is seeking them out in abundance and if he can't see them he will dig for them.
Will they hurt him as if they will he will have to stop going in the garden as, as soon as you open the back door he is straight out and head down seeking them out.  I can't distract him with toys or food and it is obviously slowing down the housetraining as he has other things on his mind and I end up having to pick him up and bring him back in as those slimy things terrify me.

Snails and slugs are vectors for heart and lungworm.  Do not allow dogs to eat them

Thanks, I live in SE England too.  Oh dear not sure what to do as I can't never let him out, do you think I should worm him for heartworm reguarly as a precaution then?

You need to try and get rid of the infestation!  Last summer I had an infestation of snails and slugs-some of them were huge!  It used to creep me out watching them migrating across my patio every night, god knows where they were off too!  Luckily enough I never had a problem with my dogs or cats trying to eat them.  I used pet-friendly snail pellets but my Dad has used biological products in his garden before, similar things are found here.  You can also find some more advice here.  Ofcourse after they are dead you will need to be vigilant in collecting the remains of the little blighters before the dogs do, but once they're gone, that's it! :)

Just wanted to say, not sure what type of pet friendly pellets you have used, but I believe the ones that have the poison Metaldehyde often state they are pet friendly. Do be careful for your dog's sake :)

If you sprinkle salt on slugs you will see them disappear !!!! ugh!!!!! horrible to watch though.

Not only what everyone else has said, but if your neighbours have laid slug pellets and then the slugs come to your garden your dog could be poisoned no matter how careful you are.

i like the idea of the Electric Fence to repel these slimy pests from second link supplied by spaniel-lover. It is true, gives a mild electric shock and no dead bodies to clean up too. ideal if you don't get on with your neighbour as they will all slither next door. Worth a try bevb.

Salt is a good remedy but not so good if the dogs eats too much of it which im sure he will do if hes a taster. You can buy a bucket type thing with a certain kind of beer in it, the slugs go for it climb in and die also your pup wouldnt be able to get to it as it has side spaces and a lid.
