Anyone had there wisdom teeth out, i've been suffering in pain for months now and i'm due to have 3 wisdom teeth and 2 back teeth removed in hospital in June...i'm scared but can't wait because this problem is keeping me awake at night and i'm in pain 24 hours a day. I've took kapake and diflafenac and paracetomal and iburofen...and now i'm taking co-codamol and iburofen but nothings moving the pain, i've also been on anti-biotics i've had 6 lots in 4 months... the dentist is telling me that they can't give me any stronger pain killers for dental pain.I was given penicillin and it caused thrush down below so now i refuse to take them and i take Metronidazole 400mg.... i really can't take this pain much longer.

The other day i'd had enough and just wanted the pain to stop so i took 6 paracetomal together but it still didn't shift it. I have also been told that i have a cyst by the wisdom tooth and i think thats whats causing the pain.

Any advice?
Cheers

i had my wisdom tooth removed 2 years ago but the dentist it it didnt hurt at the time but i kept my self dozed up on anadin xtra for a couple of days.
- By steph Date 10.04.05 16:51 UTC
Yep, had all four removed about 7 years ago - general anaesthetic, overnight stay in hospital, but well worth it.

Pain afterwards, yes but controlled by alternate paracetamol based product and ibuprofen (every two hours I took one dose or the other if you know what I mean.

Looked like I had been beaten up, my daughter (about 4 at the time) still remembers how horific I looked and cried when she saw me.

Was in pain like you, having infections, etc. Now absolutely nothing.  A brilliant job!!!

HTH
Steph

p.s I wouldn't recommend it if I hadn't have had a GA though!
- By justlou Date 10.04.05 16:58 UTC
Thanks for your replies... my dentist can't remove them because the one wisdom tooth is right by the nerve, and she also did some route canal treatment that went wrong and thats why i have to have the two back teeth out as well.... i can't wait to have them out!!!!!!
- By STARRYEYES Date 10.04.05 17:45 UTC
sound like maybe you need to change your dentist ...but not that simple nowadays.
I had similar problem to yourself swollen face acheing gums swollen glands horrible taste in mouth was told to have my wisdom teeth out by a young dentist who was covering for my usual one, made the appointment and was waiting like you then my own dentist returned so I went to see him again ,turned out that I had an infection said my wisdom teeth hadnt properly come through and that the pain was because I was teething I'm 46yrs....cancelled appointment and stuck with it they've now come through. Very painful.
At first I thought he was taking the p*** but said that hes got patients over eighty who have started teething!!!!!!!!!

I feel for you I really do.
I dont suppose you should do this but.... I use to hold a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel on my face it worked for me.
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 10.04.05 17:45 UTC
Hi Lou,
I am also waiting to have 3 of mine out at the hospital under a general. One is impacted and as I have to have the general for that I thought I may have them all out that way rather than visit the nasty dentist fully awake!!! Hope it goes o.k and let me know how you get on, but not if it is really bad cos that will put me off. Good luck.
- By Spook [gb] Date 10.04.05 19:37 UTC
Well I had two removed by my drop dead gorgeous dentist. Swooon ;)  I was in agony after a gap between the gum and the tooth had become infected. It was uncomfortable being awake and having them removed but not painful. After the anaesthetic had worn off it was horrid. Painkillers from the dentist, hot wet teabags on my gums at night to stop me grinding the stitches (also a natural antiseptic). It couldn't have been that bad because I was sharp back with the dentist huffing and puffing on top of me pulling the next one out ;)
- By justlou Date 10.04.05 21:24 UTC
Oh thanks for all your replies i really do appreciate them.... i've just took 2 more co-codamol,2 iburofen and 1 anti-biotic, i feel like a tablet (lol) but the pains still not gone.

I will let everyone know how it went once i've had them out but i am a bit scared!!!!

To be honest the dentist i was with, i sacked her because she did 2 route canal treatments and they didn't work and everytime i went and told her i was in pain she'd just put me on anti-biotics. I begged her to take the teeth out but she refused, so at the moment i dont have a dentist and i cant seem to get one because everyone i phone they tell me that there not accepting new nhs patients, but we have an emergancy dental clinic on a saturday and sunday so i went to see the emergancy dentist yesturday and she was useless, i begged her for stronger pain killers and she refused telling me that the co-codamol that i bought were strong enough but i feel so exhausted because i cant sleep with the pain. Thanks for the idea of a hot water bottle on my face, i'm gonna try that tonight.

Anyway for now take care. x
- By steph Date 10.04.05 21:32 UTC
If I were you I would telephone the hospital tomorrow and ask to see the 'dentist' there.  Tell them that you no longer have a dentist and you are in so m uch pain, they MIGHT get you in for the op earlier!
- By justlou Date 10.04.05 22:26 UTC
Hi Steph.... i've tried that but there telling me that i must wait on the waiting list. my appointment in June is an emergancy appointment.... is all they have said to me is they will put me on a cancellation list and could phone me at anytime. When i went to the hospital 2 weeks ago the nurse could see how much pain i was in and she just advised me to go to my doctors to get some strong painkillers to tied me over till June... i've called my doctor and the next available appointment they gave me is 18th april.

To be honest i've had enough now...i'm taking so many tablets and its making me feel sick.
Oh yes one last thing i'm on the depo (pill injection) and have been now for 5 years, but today i've started bleeding heavy down below...i dont usually bleed (because of the injection) but i phoned nhs direct to ask for advice because i think that the anti-biotics that i was given yesturday have caused the bleeding and nhs direct couldn't help me because they dont have any information on this matter, so i feel like i'm banging my head up a brick wall, so now not only do i have jaw ache (throb) i also have thrush caused by the penicillin and i'm bleeding.

I feel so stressed.....roll on June!!!!!!
- By steph Date 10.04.05 22:33 UTC
I think the bleeding is more likely due to the amount of paracetamol you are taking (correct me if I am wrong here) but I THINK my Dr told me to take ibuprofen for painful periods because paracetamol can make the bleeding worse.

You sound in a real state (sorry), try putting some Canestan or similar on a tampon before use, it might help take some of the 'itching' away.  Have a couple of days off work and  get some sleep, it's awful when you can't sleep and you feel bad - it really makes you feel worse, believe me I know.

Keep an eye on how many tablets you are taking too!

Chin up!
Steph
- By justlou Date 10.04.05 22:47 UTC
Thanks Steph... been using canesten for 2 weeks now because thats how long i've had the thrush.
But now because i'm bleeding none of the doctors seem to care. I'll try and cut down on the amount of tablets i'm taking but when i'm in pain i dont think about how many i've took i just want to stop the pain.
Take care. x
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 04:21 UTC
Hi Everyone..... I've been awake most the night with this pain.

I dont care what the stupid dentist said something isn't right, this pain is killing me.
I think i may have an absess on the way... well thats what it feels like.

Going to take some more painkillers!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By Vicki [gb] Date 11.04.05 05:57 UTC
Morning Justlou,

The painkillers co-codmol, or Kapake as they are more commonly known, are extremely strong.  I had major surgery in 2003 and I was given these to ease the pain.  I also take them for an on-going back problem.  They are about the strongest any doctor will give you.  I understand that you just want the pain to go away, but taking so many will make you nauseous (I've been there!) - you should only take 8 in a 24hour period- that's 2 every four hoursand then an 8 hour break for sleep (:().  Please do not take any more painkillers of any kind than that.  I know you are in agony, but they are not working, and you are harming yourself with this high dosage/combination.

Have you thought about getting in touch with the

British Dental Association

W1G 8YS

tel:        020 7935 0875
fax:       020 7487 5232

they may be able to point you in the direction of a "proper" emergency dentist who can address your problem.

Good luck - we are all thinking of you.

:)
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 06:19 UTC
Thanks Vicky, i also suffer with a back problem (shuermanns diease) a crumbling of the spine...and thats why the doctor gives me the kapake.

I was having stabbing pains in my jaw this morning, woke up in tears i've took 3 co-codamol and 2 iburofen but it's only took the edge of it, which is better than nothing i suppose.

I just dont know how i'll manage till June, but i will give that number a call and see if they can help me.(thank you for that)

I do try not to take the painkillers but i can't take the pain.

Take care. x
- By LF [gb] Date 11.04.05 06:24 UTC
Hi Just lou,

You poor thing, what a terrible time you are having :(  Why don't you try phoning your GP surgery this morning and insist on being seen as an emergency; tell them that you have been in horrendous pain over the weekend and that you simply cannot cope until the 18th.  Also tell them about the bleeding.  If the receptionist is resistant, demand (nicely, but firmly) to speak to a Doctor and allow the Doc to take the decision about whether you should be seen.

If all else fails, and the pain remains intolerable, present yourself at A & E at the local hospital.  I wouldn't advocate using this method lightly, but it sounds as if you are truly suffering and if I was in your shoes and couldn't get anywhere with my GP I would use this as the last resort.  As others have said though, watch your consumption of pills in case you accidently take too many.

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted out soon!

Lesley
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 11.04.05 06:37 UTC
You should not be going throught this pain, I was on a waiting list for surgery on my mouth, not wisdom teeth and I was in agony also. I went to the hospital begged the doctors, cried etc. and I got an appt the next day. If you shown them how much pain you are in and can't go on they have to do something, they wouldn't let an animal sufer like this?
I used to phone them constantly asking if any cancellations had come up, phone those numbers you were given and explain your situation, making sure they realise how bad it is I'm sure you will get somewhere.
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 06:47 UTC
Thanks LF and Spottydog... i will phone my G.P at 8.30am and ask for an emergancy appointment, if they say no i will go to A & E, i did phone A & E the other night before phoning nhs direct and the hospital said we can't help you phone nhs direct!!!!!

Thanks for all your advice you've all been a great help. How can teeth cause so much pain, i wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!!!!!!!!

Take care. x
- By sandrah Date 11.04.05 06:45 UTC
There is nothing worse then toochache, it really gets you down.

When I had it badly, they had to wait for antibiotics to work before they could do anything my dentist said just take iburofen but I was in so much pain I spoke to my pharmasist.  He told me to take 2 paracetimol every four hours and 2 sulphadene extra every four hours, but take them two hours apart if you see what I mean.  You can only take the maximum dose for each in a day, but by taking them in two hourly intervals like that it really did help.

Good luck, has your hosipital got an emergency dental department?  Worth a phone call as ours has.

Sandra
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 06:53 UTC
Hi Sandra... our hospital does have a dentist but they refuse to see me until June when i have them out. As they say that they can't do anything for wisdom teeth as 1 of my wisdom teeth is so close to the nerve and i also have a cyst there thats why they want me to have them out and be put to sleep to have it done.

This is my 6th lot of anti-biotics in 4 months but 3 weeks ago when i were put on them they didn't help just caused me thrush.

Thank you
Take care. x
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 11.04.05 07:31 UTC
I'd phone those numbers you were given, I have had horrendous probs with my teeth in the past due to sinusitis and grinding. I have only ever been sedated to have them removed, gums operated on. There are plenty of dentist who are surgeons who use sedation and may be able to help. By the way you don't remember a thing with sedation, just come round happy and pain free. A bit like being drunk. You have to have someone with you to take you home and stay with you for a few hours.
- By Vicki [gb] Date 11.04.05 07:58 UTC
Spotty Dog's suggestion sounds like your best option Justlou.  Can you raise the necessary cash for this - I am almost certain it will need to be done privately, especially as it needs to be done "NOW".  Good luck - let us know how you fare.

Hugs
Vicki
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 11:28 UTC
Thanks spotty dog & vicki... i've been to the doctors this morning told him i've had enough and he's put me on diclofenac & dihydrocodeine, and its still not completely took away the pain but i'm not in so much pain now (thank god) i did look in to paying private to have the 3 wisdom and 2 back teeth out but i honestly couldn't afford what there asking they want £66.00 per half an hour and £200 per tooth.

I don't work as i have a spinal condition so there's no possible way i could raise that kind of money, so i guess i'll just have to wait until June.

Once again thanks for all your advice, keep it coming though as i'm taking it all in (lol)

Take care. x
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 11.04.05 14:37 UTC
You poor thing. I had an absess on one of my front teeth due to a bad dentist and that pain was the worse I have ever felt. It was far worse than child birth and I honestly wanted to go to sleep and not wake up. It came up in the roof of my mouth the size of an egg and when the dentist finally agreed to see me rather than fob me of with antibiotics, he popped it with a scalpel, no anaesthetic or anything, if I was not in the state I was I would have thumped the guy, needless to say I have changed dentists now (you will not be treated the same, this was a nasty barbaric dentist). I agree that you keep trying the emergency numbers, your gp and even a&e if you can't get anyone to help you. There is no way you should be taking all those pain killers until June, you could damage your liver. Please perservere until someone does something.
As for the thrush have you tried natural bio yoghurt? It works, it is quite messy but works very well. Put it on a tampon and where ever it is beeded, just being cool from the fridge is a relief in itself. Also the canesten Tablet you swallow is good to. I had a coil fitted a few years ago after my second child, and I bled for 4 months! The bleeding will not be making the thrush any better, so try the yoghurt and once the bleeding eases try a pessary or tablet. Big hugs and try to remain positive. Katie.xxx
- By steph Date 11.04.05 17:03 UTC
Justlou, I've just got back from work and am sorry you are still suffering.  I don't have anything more to offer you in the way of advice - except don't forget to wear cotton knickers ;-)

Watch those tablets too!!
- By Smurggle [gb] Date 11.04.05 15:03 UTC
Hiya JustLou,
I'm really horrified to hear about the amount of pain you're in and the way you have been messed about, how on earth you are expected to put up with this much pain for so long is beyond me. And the amount of painkillers you are taking is mad, please try not to take 6 paracetemol at once, the damage you could do yourself may not present for a long time but you could be seriously harming your liver. I think you need to be really quite demanding with your doctor, just try being stroppy it sometimes works, just keep harassing these people and you'd be amazed how it can speed things up. In the mean time have you tried something a bit more specific for the pain like holding some soluble aspirin in your mouth for 5 minutes? or the old favourite, clove oil? it may not work but it's worth a go and it's not as harmful.

Hope you feel better soon
Sarah
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 17:04 UTC
Thanks Katie & Sarah....i've been to the doctors today and i told him if he didn't help me i'd kill myself.. so he gave me some stronger painkillers and now i'm not in so much pain.

I also went to the hospital this afternoon to see if i could rush this appointment on instead of waiting until June and now they've agreed to take 1 of the teeth out in 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!! as thats the earliest appointment they have, they said if they remove 1 it should get me out of pain until June when i have the rest out....but they wont take all of them out without general anasetic.

Take care. x
- By Kerioak Date 11.04.05 17:46 UTC
Another alternative might be to see if you can get in sooner at another hospital.  Like you I had ever increasing pain and infections with my wisdom teeth and once I got over the pain of the op (I had some severe complications that the surgeon had only seen once before in his 20 years of doing hospital dental surgery) it has been wonderful and I wished I had pushed to have it done years ago.
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 11.04.05 18:55 UTC
Keep us updated Lou and if you ever need/want to talk properly pm me and I will give you my phone number, I know what you are going through and I am worried about you, I remember very clearly what it is like and I wasn't in the right state of mind at all. Big hugs chick and we're all here for you.xxx
- By justlou Date 11.04.05 19:11 UTC

Justlou,

Get your Dr to check that you are not suffering from neuralgia (sp) as that can cause pain in face/teeth.  Just a though!

Glad you are feeling better today!

Steph
- By justlou Date 12.04.05 20:58 UTC
Thanks Steph...i'll ask the doctor to check that. After posting my last post about not being in pain, it came back!!!! i've took 2 tablets and i feel a bit calmer now....but something must be going on...i hope i get a good night sleep tonight as because of this pain i've hardly had any.

I'll let you know how i get on.
Take care. x
- By steph Date 12.04.05 21:06 UTC
Google for neuralgia, see if the symptoms match what you have.  Just a thought as I once worked with a lady who suffered with it, it sounded awful.
- By justlou Date 12.04.05 21:13 UTC
will look on google now.
cheers
- By justlou Date 13.04.05 07:24 UTC
Hi I think i've found the pain.....top right wisdom tooth is broke!!!!!

I'm gonna call the hospital today again.

I'll let you all know how i get on later.

Hi i've just been phoning round to get a dentist and after phoning about 20 numbers i've managed to get an emergancy appointment for 3.30pm today.

Hopefully he will remove the wisdom tooth and get me out of pain....

I'll let you all know later when i get back!!!!
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 13.04.05 15:39 UTC
Sorry, bit late I know, but GOOD LUCK! Let us know how you are when you can. :-) Big hugs.xxx
- By justlou Date 13.04.05 16:37 UTC
Hi I've been the dentist and he's removed the wisdom tooth that was causing all the pain, there was a hole in the tooth and thats why it's been hurting so much...so now i'm waiting for the numbness to wear off!!!!!!!

I can now wait until june to get the rest out i hope.....having the tooth out was horrible but if it's ended all the pain it was worth it, i'll let you know later how i'm feeling.
Take care. x
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 13.04.05 16:48 UTC
Take it easy tonight. Some cosodyl or oraldene mouthwash would be helpfull if you could get some. It will help by keeping the site clean so to avoid infection and it helps with the soreness too. It is good stuff available from most chemists. (used to be a dental nurse) also a salt water rinse is good if you can't get the other 2. xxx
- By justlou Date 13.04.05 17:25 UTC
Oh thanks Tigerlily.... you are one amazing person!!!

I have some corsodyl from the last time i had tooth pain, so i will use that and also i'll use salt water.

Numbness has worn off now and it just feels sore but nothing like the pain that i've had over the last few weeks!!!!!!!!

So now i can't wait until June to get the rest out. i've took 2 di-hyrocodiene so that may be easing the pain.

Take care. x
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 13.04.05 17:43 UTC
Once you feel you can, try stopping the painkillers completely so you can get a true idea of whether that was the problem tooth. Hopefully it was, and sounds like it, but until you stop pain relief you will not know. I am sure you will be able to go to June now that is out. Keep up with the mouth rinses and not sure if you know, but Corsodyl can cause a slight brown staining on your teeth, don't worry if this does happen it go again with normal brushing. The ammount of benefits Corsodyl gives far out weighs the low risk of staining. Watch what you are eating doesn't get stuck in the hole, did they put in a stitch? If they didn't then you do have to be carefull nothing lodges itself in there that could cause an infection. The mouth rinsing should help prevent this. The dentist can clear it easy if it does happen. Good luck and any questions I will try my best to help. xxx
- By justlou Date 13.04.05 19:54 UTC
Once again Tigerlily thank you very much.....my teeth aren't brilliant white anyway because i smoke!!!!
They didn't stitch because it was the top right wisdom tooth. I will try to be careful what i eat as i dont want an infection to go through all that pain again.
I will also try to stay of the painkillers unless i get desparate!!!!!

i really think that it was the right tooth because i went there today and begged him to take the tooth out and he tapped on the teeth and there was no pain but when he tapped on the wisdom tooth it killed, then he took an xray and gave me the injection and then 15 mins later he called me back in the room and said he couldn't see the wisdom tooth on the xray so he needed to take another one to be sure that it was the wisdom tooth that needed taking out, so he did another one and sent me back out the room and then 10 mins later he called me back in and told me that it was the wisdom tooth that was the problem because there was a whole in the tooth.

So i will see how i go and if i get anymore pain i'll be straight down the dentists.

Take care. x
- By steph Date 13.04.05 19:56 UTC
Justlou,

So glad you've finally been 'sorted out', hopefully it will be the end of the pain for you.  Try to keep off the painkillers, the soreness will go away soon.  Do the mouthwash thing and I'm sure June will come soon enough.

Take care

Steph

Hi Justlou,

Really glad to hear that you've got it sorted out :D  It must have been horrible for you - nothing worse than toothache   Roll on June when you can finally get it all fixed.  I had one wisdom tooth out years ago and I'm still waiting for the rest of them to either appear or cause trouble!  I know what you mean about white teeth though, I'm a smoker too.  Still they do say the ones that aren't pearly white are stronger, LOL!  Well, I can kid myself my nicotined teeth are really a strong set of gnashers and not just a set of stained old molars :D

Lesley
- By justlou Date 13.04.05 21:54 UTC
Lol.... my mouth is so sore at the moment and i had to have 5 injections and 3 of those were in the roof of my mouth...hopefully this will sort it's self out....i'll go to bed now with my hot water bottle(lol)

If i'm sore like this with 1 tooth, god knows what it will be like with another 4 out!!!!

Take care. x
- By LF [gb] Date 14.04.05 07:51 UTC
Nah, don't worry Justlou, 4 will be a breeze  Just don't think of the immediate pain, concentrate on the long term relief!  I wonder if anyone has ever just had their wisdom teeth grow in nicely, exactly where they're supposed to be, with no associated trauma whatsoever? I'm convinced my other 3 are lurking in my jaws, plotting future mouth mayhem!

Hope you got a decent night's sleep :)
