can they be kept outside?

Well I had one for 6 years, he would have hated being put outside he loved the family around him even at night he slept outside the bedrooms .

Yes they can.
If you can provide a kennel with a nice cosy bed in it so they can keep out of adverse weather if they choose and provide fresh water then you shouldn't have any problems. :)
