Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Problem with bones?
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 09.04.05 10:10 UTC
My dog is fed on Autarky with occasional treats of raw chicken wings. We managed to get quite a few chicken wings cheap recently so she's been having 1 per day for the past week I think.
For the past 3 days she's been sick just once every morning. This morning I was informed by my parents that it contained a bone.
I'm a bit worried now... should I continue feeding the bones? She's been fine with them until now.

Our dog is fed on Burns and we also started giving chicken wings at lunchtime and then the odd bone. After we had given the bone our dog was also sick and had the runs and we also found bone in her sick. I continued to give chicken wings but no longer give bones. I am sure someone who feeds bones all the time will be on to give 'us' more info on the subject!!

Hi
I feed raw and feed chicken wings/carcasses regularly.I have never had a problem. If I were you I would stop feeding them for a few days and then start to reintroduce them slowly.I would feed one every other day.The sickness may not be down to the chicken wings.

Mine have never had a problem with chicken wings or carcasses but each dog deals with foods differently, like us  :)

Leaving it for a few days and then reintroducing them is good advice. My pup seems to have a problem with raw mackeral, she was fine on it for a month or so and then every time she had it, within 2 hours, she regurgitated it and then tried to eat it again and then the same thing happened. She was only having it once a week but I have decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try it again.

Thanks everyone, I'll leave it for a few days and see how she does :)
She seems perfectly fine in herself other than the sickness.

Hi Cutewolf - (cute name :D)  Sometimes (although not often) my hound will sick up (technical term ;)) a piece of bone if she has scoffed too quickly or not crunched properly!  For instance, she once bit off the 'knuckle' of a lamb leg bone and swallowed it.  Two days later she brought it back up - I believe (although it's possible I'm wrong) that is due to the stomach acids not being able to deal with such a piece and therefore expelling it?  She once swallowed a wing whole only to bring it back up again and crunch it properly this time
Does your dog scoff a bit?  Perhaps you could try giving the wing a bash with a hammer or clever?  maybe try softer again such as poussin?
Good luck
Sarah :)

One of  dogs will  regurgitate wings etc he has swallowed without chewing properly but usually within about 20 mins of eating
