Topic Dog Boards / Health / Welsh terrier health tests, which ones?
- By wheaten_mad [gb] Date 08.04.05 20:42 UTC
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what health are recommended for a welsh terrier? I don't have on yet have one but I am very interested in the breed and progressing it. I would like to learn about the genetics and so on so that I can eventually breed a health litter. If anyone could give me a little bit of info I would be really grateful.

Anyone?

Did try and find out but the only thing I could find was some eye problems under investigation.  I think a call to the breed club (their web site wasn't very enlightening) would be in order :)

Welsh are pretty much free of genetic diseases, however there is some incidence of glucoma.  If my memory is correct an eye testing was held at a breed club show a while back and all dogs passed with flying colours.

This is a very small breed and by and large the only place you'll get sound advice is from within the breed.  You say that you don't have a dog yet but are perhaps interested in a future within the breed, if so choose your breeder well as they will be the best person to advise you in these matters.  Find one who is willing and has the time to help you, go to some of the Champ Shows this summer and talk to as many folk as possible.  I'd also advise getting hold of a copy of Bardi McLennans' Welsh Terrier leads the Way.

Sorry it's take so long for a reply, there just aren't many Welshaholics out there!

Thank you for the replies :) We have been to two shows including the Welsh terrier open show which happened to be held where we go to ringcraft. The man that runs the local pet shop breeds and shows CH welsh terriers and I have been invited to go round to the house and see the welshie as they are in the home. So hopefully I will know quite a bit about them when I do get one and will know what breeder to go for. Thank you for the help :)
