I have a Lab / Shephard Mix puppy that is 11 weeks and doesn't really want to eat. I got her a couple days ago, and she has eaten very little since. She was brought up on Nutrition Nuggets (Purple Bag) for puppies, but she doesn't seem to care for that at all. I got this puppy from a place 2 hours away from my location and the women there had about 20 dogs for sale. I'm thinking she didn't pay attention to how well this dog was eating. The car ride home for her was nerve racking I'm sure, and she is still kind of nervous. She was very nervous up until yesterday. Even laying down, her heart was going incredibly fast. It has slowed down a lot now, but it still occurs. Also, she shakes a lot when she sleeps, and whimpers also. A lot of times she whines for no reason at all, but I seem to always find a solution for that. I tried feeding her bread and she ate a couple bites and got fed up with it. I cooked a little scrambled eggs and she loved that, but I can't really rely on that. I just wanted to get her appetite going. Mixing all kinds of real food is giving her runny poos, and I'd like to try to avoid that. I even tried wetting her food down a little and she didn't go for it. I try'd giving her dog biscuit bones, breaking them up into very small pieces, but she doesn't eat those often. If anyone has any suggestions, help, or advice I'd appreciate it.

I really think you need to get her seen by a vet, she doesn't sound very well at all and a increased heart rate can be a sign of infection. It doesn't sound like she had a good start does it?

A puppy of eleven weeks should be having 4 feeds a day,I have always given 2 weetabix with ewes or goats milk for breakfast, meat and small bite mixer for Lunch, same at teatime, maybe scrambled 2 eggs or weetabix as above for supper, have you taken her to the vets yet, hope all is well.
Bye Sheila.

Take her to the vet for a check up, your puppy sounds as though she may originate from a source of infection.........
There is no need to give her human food, choose a good quality food such as Innova EVO or Burns and feed 4 times a day.
Neither weetabix nor any other breakfast cereal designed for humans provides a dog with any goodness and milk is really not suitable for most dogs post weaning. Bread is not terribly useful either. Hopefully she is drinking but I would get this pup to a vet asap.

Yes, definitely have her checked over by the vet.
If she still has the runs, boil some chicken breasts until cooked and really soft and just feed them with nothing else for a day - if there is nothing else going like an infection, it will cure her runs, and she should love them. Then gradually introduce the food you have decided on. Don't chop and change because a puppy's stomach can be delicate like a baby's and constantly giving different food is a sure-fire way to the runs.

We have had dogs for 40 years and all have been very healthy and lived long lives, the diet of weetabix and ewes milk was given to us from a very well respected breeder,by the time my dogs are six months i take them off ie.eggs ,weetabix ect, then they have tinned dog food or chicken with mixer and any left over veggies, and i will carry on with this as i am not 100 per cet sure about these complete foods,it is the old ways of feeding my dogs are super fit and that enough for me .
Sheila.
I'd get the puppy checked over by the vet. It could be that it needs time to settle and my be loose or out of sorts. It can be the change in environment, change of water or just missing it's brothers & sistersand fretting. Give it lots of reassurance, pleanty of strokes, loves and kisses. Keep it close to you, if its had lots of siblings it will feel very much alone, think how a child feels first day in the nursery! As to feeding, we have been breeding a number of years and have always fed 4 times a day for a puppy so young. Usually porridge or weetabix with goats milk from breakfast, Scrambled eggs with wholemeal toast for lunch, a meat meal with mixer for tea, and weetabix before bed time. Along with the odd treats of carrot sticks, apple and bananas. All our puppies have good appetites and a plump, happy little animals. They soon get used to the food. Ours usually have good solid poohs. If your pup is refusing food, perhaps give small pieces of boiled chicken fed by hand to giveit some confidence in you by letting the pup see you eating the chicken and sharing it to coax it to eat. Is it drinking water ok. If so put a spoon of glucose in its water to give it some energy , not too much though its a bit like rehydrate what tou give babies when they have the runs or vomitting to ensure their energy levels are maintained.

Hasnt Weetabix got alot of salt in it. The only reason I ask is, that my Doc advised me against eating it as I have high blood pressure. I didnt think salt was good for dogs either.

You're quite right, Emma. Weetabix really isn't a suitable (although it's quite traditional) food for puppies.

Dogs don't seem to suffer the same results of high blood pressure that we do Emma :).
Weetabix wouldn't be my choice but it is a very traditional puppy feed and many, many litters have been reared on it presumably with goods results otherwise it would have been dropped years ago. Its only for a few weeks anyway :).

I know dogs dont suffer from high blood pressure like us. I was just informing people of where I got my information from ie the high salt in Weetabix and the fact I didnt think salt was good for dogs either.

You are right excessive salt is not good, I think for someone known to have raised BP that is very good advise but I have never heard a doctor say that people should stop eating Weetabix otherwise :) I doubt a meal or two as part of a mixed diet for a litter would do all that harm either otherwise all those litters would never have grown into healthy animals :)
Woah, I didn't expect so many replys so fast! :) This dog is a challenge for sure. She drinks a lot of water now, and I got her eating a little more. I tried scrambled eggs and she gobbled those down the first time. I tried it again and she didn't wanna touch it. She has settled down a lot from what I can tell, and she seems to be doing a lot better. She isn't eating 4 times a day though, but she is getting better at knowing where the food bowl is! I had to hand feed this dog at first, and I'm happy to say shes gaining a little confidence. She just wont eat unless Im watching her. When I picked this puppy up, she looked fairly healthy. I can't really judge due to my lack of experience, but I didn't see any signs to worry about. All the dogs around her looked healthy as well when I bought her. Everyday that I've had her, she's been doing a little better, but from the information given she isn't eating enough. I'm thinking this will come soon. I was going to take her to the vet in 2 more weeks for her 2nd shot, but with all the mentionings of a trip asap I thought I should ask; From my words here, do you think she needs to go prior? Thank all of you for the replies, it's well appreciated! I just need to housebreak her .... Before my carpet becomes a swimming pool. I'll check the behavior forums for this though!
