
Not much help, I'm afraid, but we used to have it fairly regularly with sheep. You could lose them with it, as the risk of infection is obviously very high. It will go back again, and the vet will stitch it in - stitches normally removed when the vet is happy that things have returned to 'normal'.
We never spayed a sheep (the mind boggles), but wouldn't breed from them again as the same thing would almost certainly have happened.
On balance, I should take your vet's advice.
