Topic Dog Boards / Health / poorly puppy after vaccination
- By stann [gb] Date 04.04.05 22:08 UTC
we took our brand new pup for a health check today,(he only came home yesterday). He has had his first jab and his breeder said he had no reaction. The vet claimed that vaccinations before 8 weeks do not count and gave his another one. Since this he has become ill, he has sickness and diarroea and is very lathargic. We are a bit worried as we previously, unknowingly bought a pup from a notorious puppy farmer and he was dead within a week.(we did not know it was a puppy farm as no other dogs were visible & the bloke seemed genuine, we found out after the pup was dead). The puppy which died had similar symptons. The immunisation the breeder gave was only a week and a half ago, it was not due until 2 weeks time according to her vet. As you can imagine we are extremely worried, does antone know whats wrong?

Sorry Stann, We don't vacinate. We use Homoeopathic nosodes. I don know that tha the vacines can make your puppy off colour for a few days similar to a child being vacinated. Just keep a close eye on your puppy, make sure that it has plenty of fresh water  and keep a watch on the temperature, Any problems and check with your vet. Don't however allow the vet to give any other doses of vacine- antibiotics, steriods etc. until your little one is completey over the first dose. It seems all too often the  vet will give one vacination or another without being too sure what it's for.

My vet doesn't give vaccinations till 10 weeks to allow the maternal antibodies circulating in the pup to have waned, because they will negate the effect of the vaccine. Did you have a vaccination record-card stating exactly what had been given and when? Without that the vet is 'flying blind'. Pups often are off-colour when they change home because of the enormous stresses involved. Are you feeding exactly the same food (and water) as he was getting at the breeder's home?

we are feeding him the exact same meal he had, the breeder gave us a bag and we haven't given him any treats as i wanted him to settle in first. when he went to the vet i took all his information, the vaccine card feeding guide and flea and worming record. the vet read the vaccination card and still did it any way. I contacted his breeder and she said that it could be a mixture of stress, the journey home, tiredness (he was up all night), and the extra vaccination. this morning he has a sour smell around him. Still worried as our last puppy died within a week of a virus similar to parvo. I am probably over reacting. Advice would be greatfully received.

Hi Stann
Sorry your pup is poorly, I can understand you being worried.
I think it was very remiss of the vet to give another vaccination at such a young age - too much for his immune system to cope with in my opinion.

Do you know where the sour smell is coming from ? Sometimes an ear infection causes this and that may also account for the tiredness and apathy.

If he were mine I would be taking him to a different vet to get him checked out. It might not be anything serious but I don't think I'd want to take any chances.

Keep us informed.

I unfortunately I have been down this road far to often regarding vaccinations :(

I am not going to give my personal opinion on vaccs but if I were you, I would definitely change vets and do it TODAY. Get the new vet to do a thorough examination of your pup and explain all of the symptoms and circumstances. You can't take any chances with one so young. Especially since you have had a very unfortunate experience in the past.

Regarding the sour smell, in my experience, all unwell dogs give off an odour. My latest pup, after having a very bad reaction with vaccines gave off a sour "metalic" smell, and until I got all of the poison out of her system, continued to smell this way.

But please get your pup checked out as they can go down hill very quickly, especially in view of the fact your pup has had to cope with very different circumstances, ie, new home, stressful journey and then vaccinations that it probably shouldn't have had so soon, all this weakens the immune system.

Let us know how you get on and good luck :)

If he were my pup, I'd be seeing my nearest Homeopathic Vet asap.

Sending Reiki, hope he's OK...

Hi, Thanks for all the advice. I took him to a different vet, who checked him over and gave him some kaolin, he told me to keep him calm and warm and now he is bright as a button. His diarroea has stopped and he hasnt been sick since. Lets hope he stays like this. The bad smell was due to him being unwell. I have to keep him quiet until the weekend.

Glad to hear that he's perked up, Stann.  I'm sure you'll keep a watchful eye on him but it sounds like he's over the worst.

Best wishes.

How long ago did you lose one wiith parvo ?????   as it can stay in your home for around 6 months, as for homeopathic. a friend i have who only uses these nosodes has just lost a puppy through parvo and has another on a drip as we speak,   :(

it was a virus similar to parvo, it wasn't actually parvo and it was 4 months ago. I checked this with the vet. I don't know wether the virus has the same life as parvo though. If i can remember the name of it i will post it on this page for further advise.
