There are four main areas of health that must be screened before Cavaliers are bred from
1.Eye must be certified as clear by a BVA/ISDS/KC panelist
2.Hips should be X rayed & scored for HD under the breed average
3.Heart must be certified clear
4.MRI screen for Syringohydromyelia must be clear
All the above will be covered by a certificate from the testing ver, Eyes & Heart must be tested yearly & with twelve months of the dogs being bred from & the puppies being ready to leave. The parents should also be at least 2 1/2 years of age BEFORE being bred from
If any of the above tested have not been done do not buy the puppy. Syringohydromyelia is a very very painful condition that can result in the early death of the dog. Do not accept anyone's word that the dogs have been tested all the above conditions have a certificate that can be produced
GP vets cannot screen eyes, score hips or test for SHM
There are lots of people out there breeding Cavaliers(& some sadly are on this site)that do not do all the health tests nor breed withinh the guidelines of the breed geneticists & those doing the research & testing for the breed, they chose to bury their heads in the sand & the ones that pay are the dogs they breed & their new owners
