Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Lunging at Neighbours Dog

When the neighbours are home and its a nice day they always leave their back door open.
Whenever I let my dogs out, their yappy little terrier always comes rushing out and lunges at the fence, and the dogs get into a barking fight at the fence.
The owners are arrogant and refuse to get their dog in. So I always end up getting my 4 in.
We have complained about it before, but get nowhere because we have the 4 dogs that are making the most racket!

It would make life so much easier if they just keep their door SHUT or get their dog in while mine are out.

I haven't had to worry about this over the winter, but now summers coming... :s

Does anyone else have this problem??

Or know any how to train to stop it, if there's a way..

I do!! My next door neighbours have a Staffie.  They are in all day as they don't work :d  As soon as I come in from work I go to let my dogs out and they let their Staffie out!!  They think it's funny that their Staff is trying to get at my dogs.  Same as you I end up having to bring my dogs straight in because I don't want anyone calling my dogs as I have 4 and they only have one.

It annoys me sooo much.  THey have all day to let theirs out.  They also do it when they hear me getting up in the mornings !

I know, it's annoying isn't it!! I've left the dogs barking there before because I decided to be as stubborn as the neighbours.. they eventually got their dog in but were in such a huff and slammed their door! I only did that once though, 'cause I'm scared if I leave them barking too long the fence might fall down.. and if anything happened my dogs would get the blame :(

Hi Ana,
We used to have this problem too. Next door to me they have 5 dogs of various breeds which all seem to fight and bark and a basically left to their own devices. When I let my girls out they go crazy if next doors dogs come too close to the fence. the fence is 6 ft high and very strong but my girls are 6 stone plus so a fence doesn't always stop them. They been through before but not in this house Thank God! I was forever going out and bringing mine in in case they disturbed the other neighbours but on nice days they were loosing out.  If my girls start to get too noisy or rough with each other I turn on the garden hose to the sprinkle. They Don't like water so they seperate. This day I had had enough the dogs in next door were driving me mad and mine were pacing up and down, I picked up the hose soaked mine and accidentally on purpose soaked the dogs next door too. they soon quietened down. I quickly shouted out an apoligy over the fence saying I'd slipped! Since then every time they kick off I shout "Where's the Hose"  pretending I'm talking to my girls but I soak next doors too. They have quickly learned to back off when they hear me shouting.

Have you tried distracting yours with hide chews (or similar) the moment it kicks off? Sometimes these things just develop into a habit which it might be possible to break. If they want to eat the treat / chew / whatever more than they want to bark at next door's dog then maybe they will start to look to you for a treat rather than running directly to have a bark fight with the other dog. It's worth a go. I mention hide chews because the last a little while - by which time the neighbour's dog might have calmed down! Obviously I have no idea if this would work with your situation, but it might be worth a go for a few days to see if you can break the cycle.

Surely everyone should be free to do what they wish in their own home and garden?

If you are concerned why not plant some bushes along the fence so that the issue is minimised..................

Perhaps your neighbour might post something similar along the lines of

"Whenever I let my dog out, their 4 dogs lunge at the fence, and the dogs get into a barking fight....."

What about a six foot solid wooden fence? My hubbie has put one up in our garden and it not only looks nice it keeps out the nosey neighbours! This would mean the dogs would not be able to see each other. You could also try a water pistol to distract your dogs then lots of praise and play? Sorry, don't know what else to suggest as you have no way of making them keep their dog in if they are not open to reasoning. :-)

What about a double six foot wooden fence with some of theat 4" polystyrene inbetween as sound proofing?

I have a 6 ft solid fence

The dogs cannot see each other through it!

I am getting a little fence put up infront of it now.. so hopefully that should solve it... it will probably look stupid but who cares!

It does not matter what it looks like as long as it works, and once it stops you may even be able to take it down. Good luck.xxx

I have the same problem , next door have a Rottie ( lovely dog) he is out all day whilst they are at work, has a kennel etc, mine only go out for the toilet or in the sunshine for a play , but because he is always out, as soon as he hears my patio door open he is straight up at the fence( 6 ft)barking and jumping at it, so my boy does the same and it sounds terrible, but im sure the other houses nearby must thing its my fault as i have 4 dogs.
I do feel like my dogs are missing out, they are the ones who get told off and miss out on playing, next door are aware of the situation but refuse to allow him in when they are out.
It gets that bad i look out for him going for a walk at quikly let them all out .
I think people with detached houses are very lucky !!
