That's just what I was thinking - surely there would be welfare issues for a dog with that thick a coat?
what are your intentions on having a rougth border collie, what are you going to use the dog for,the poor dog would not be able to stand the hot weather in india it's far to hot for this sort of animal jen

Not all of India is hot the higher areas in the North are very pleasant and even quite cool. I have been to Darjeeling and there were a lot of coated dogs there, mostly of the Tibetan looking sort.

The guest doesn't want a rough coated BC but a
rough collie puppy two different breeds

Hi Guest,
This may help. Although there are no rough collie breeders listed you may be worth contacting some of the clubs listed to see if they can point yoy in the right directions.

Interesting post... I have a three year old rough collie who has really struggled with our summers in London. He is lethargic and refuses to walk after 8.30 am until late evening when it is cooler. He is thoroughly miserable and luckily i go away for the whole of August to the North coast of Ireland where it is much cooler, I can't imagine how miserable he would be if we stayed in London.
Several people have suggested that we clip him totally, includng our vet as he had a funny turn last year.
I wouldn't want to do it yet as he's still so young and I feel this should be a last resort.
I'm not too worried about the appearance but would it grow back? Has anyone done this to a rough collie on here?

Hi my first thoughts are don't because if he has a proper double coat his coat will almost certainly help in regulating his body temperature. Can I just ask though has he been neutered? As this may well have changed the texture of his coat and he will need very regular grooming to get the loose undercoat that seems to be constant with neutered roughs out.JMHO Val who posts on here will hopefully be along with some more helpful advice or you could try sending her a PM
edited to add one of my rough collie girls is spayed and she has to be constantly stripped out or her coat becomes excessive

I would strip out all of his undercoat(would happen in the wild when the weather got hot) I had Rough Coated BCs & they never seem to have any trouble in any weather. I would not clip his coat off as it would be damaged being clipped, a friend used to have Roughs & hers always cast the wool under coat in late spring & early summer especially if it was getting hot
Hi,
I had a beautiful rough collie called Tika (whom sadly died last december) in the hot weather i did use to clip her right out (but dont clip to much off the ears i did once and they stuck up!). She looked a bit odd for a couple of weeks then she looked like a smooth haired collie. I use to do her in the begining of may then again in july and by winter she had a coat back again. Her coat grew back beautifully. She might not have looked like she should have clipped out but she was a much happier dog. After her clip she would have bags more energy and be much happier, as she was only our pet and not a show dog i dont see that it would do any harm.
