Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Urinating when first sees vistors

My Carin Terrier pup has always laid, rolled over and urinated when greeting anyone whether its us returning to the home, return visitors to our home and strangers out in public.   He is a very good dog (1 year) and is very good with people but continues to do this behavior.  We were told he outgrow this but he has not.  I'd like to be able to take him out in public more often (he's well behaved) but this problem prevents me from taking him along as often.  I've been told to ignore him when we first come home.  It was explained that he is just very excited and does this behavior both from excitement and as a show of respect (the rolling and urinating).  We tried this and it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.   It does not work when he meets new people. Any other ideas on what I can do to help him with this---I've been told not to discipline him on this since he is doing it out of respect and the discipline will make him do it more often.

This is very common in a submissive dog. Just ignore it (and him when he does it) and he will grow out of it - he's still only young.

You're told right about not disciplining him for it, but I'm not sure about the logic behind ignoring him when you get home - he needs to greet you when you return, when you don't pay him attention, he thinks he's done something wrong, and may well be peeing as a sign of appeasement.  I'd take him straight outside to an area where it doesn't matter when he pees, and greet him there.  A raised area may help - such as a bench or a wall.  As he gets better, he perhaps can be taught to greet you on the stairs, this means you don't have to bend over him, which is a dog body language signal that says 'you need to remember I'm the boss' and often invokes the 'submissive weeing' that you are seeing.....  It's cause and effect.....

Hi digger! I didn't say don't greet the dog - I said ignore him when he does it! I'm not sure how likely a dog is to roll over and wee in the hall (say) as a sign of appeasement if the owner's busy hanging up her coat, but all things are possible.

Ignoring the dog when you come home is actually a standard cure for this (and jumping up to greet), because it removes pressure from the dog. When the excitement of the owner's return has subsided you can happily greet a calmer dog.

I know you always give sensible advice JG, but the OP said he was told to ignore the dog on his return, regardless of his behaviour and that would stop him weeing ;)

And it probably will, because it'll calm him. Whether he's weeing due to over-excitement, or weeing in submission (over-anxiety), if he's given attention it'll 'reward' the mood. Ignore the dog (only for a couple of minutes) and he'll be calmer and the reflex weeing will stop.
