We have just came back from a 3 day break, we took the dogs and my son and his friend came too. I spoke to Charlies behaviourist before we went and she advised us to keep Charlie and my sons friend seperate, if not possible muzzle him. We kept them seperate, Charlie was always with me or boyfriend which he usually is at home. We tried as much as possible to stick to his routine, i.e. walking, feeding, even bed time. He was not happy, was sick twice even though he wasn't fed anything different, I would go as far to say he was depressed, he must have only ate 1 days food in the 3 days we were there.
I never hardly got any cuddles off him, he just lay there looking sorry for himself.
As soon as he entered the house when we got back he was back to normal and ate all his tea lastnight.
We go camping a lot in the summer and he will be coming with us.
My question is will he always be like this?
The dogs I have had in the past have always adapted as long as their routine wasn't changed too much.
We were advised not to put him in kennels as this might knock him back (his behaviour programme).

My Gabi (GSD) loves camping. We go every other week during the summer months, there is no way we could put her in kennels each time, nor would we want to. I'm sure your dog will come to love the experience, just something new. It takes an hour or so to get everything ready to go but she knows the procedure and cannot contain her exitement. Meal times remain the same but for the rest its walks and more walks and lots of attention. We live in the city and she is facinated with all the different smells and sounds of the countryside. I envy the people who have this all the time and so does Gabi. Stick with it she will love it in the end so long as she has a good time.
