We already have a 12yr old golden retriever dog and are looking to get a puppy in the spring, before our dog is to old to put up with a boisterous pup! We are looking at various breeds but like gundogs in particular and I have had a soft spot for Munsterlanders for some while. However, I do not know much about them and whether a Munsterlander would suit my family.
We are an active family and have a large garden in the country. My mum is a hill walker and I am a rider and so the dog would go for long walks and be around horses. However, I am a student and so am only home for holidays and my dad works away for several weeks at a time. Although my mum is around most of the day and my granny lives next door, the dog would have to be able to be left for a a few hours some weekday evenings. We would also like a breed that is a good "watch" dog, ie that is alert to strangers and might bark but is not aggressive. It must be an active breed enjoying being outside but also quite happy to sleep and be quiet when inside.
Finally, we would like a breed that is intelligent and easy to train, friendly and affectionate but not "clingy".
Obviously it would have to get on with other dogs and we also have a cat.
Can anyone give me any advice on this breed and if it would be suitable for my family?
