Hi everyone,

Could you help me please.....

Me and my partner collect our 8wk old Basset Hound puppy next wkend and are sooooo excited!!  I have been in constant contact with the breeder and she has been so helpful and has given us plenty of advice but Im alittle confused about when our little boy will need his first injection at the vets.  The breeder has advised that they usually wait until the pups are 10wks, but I have been advised by my vet that they can give him his first injection straight away.

What should I do, wait till he is 10wks or should I do it straight away?

Many thanks
Leanne

hi guest if you join there will be loads of help on hand with youre pup and you can ask many questions on briging up youre new pup. as for the right time for injections i had my girl done at 10 weeks for her first lot. but a friend of mine who breeds boxers does her pups between 7&8 weeks before they go to there new homes.

Different vets use different vaccines which need to be done at different times. It also varies with how much infection the vets are seeing. My own vet gives the first jab at 10 weeks, when the maternal antibodies have waned - the vaccine seems to 'take' better then. Your vet is the best person to advise for your area, so ask when you take him for his check-up within a couple of days of getting him home.

Hi it does all depend on the vet and the vaccination protocal they use. Your breeders vet may not vaccinate at 8 weeks but waits until 10 weeks. You could discuss it with your breeder to see if there is any other reason they like to wait for vaccinations and then make the choices you are most happy with. My vet does the same as yours and vacciates at 8 weeks I have found this has suited  any puppies I've had.HTH
