Hi Minniedog,  I sympathise strongly with you, I'm in exactly the same position :(  There are days when I'm busy, but even then I think I only feel 'busy' because I'm usually so quiet!  (If you understand that)  Out of a 37 hour week I could probably do all my work in 10 hours maximum.  My main problem is that as we have cover secretaries, everyone knows how quiet my job is (well that and the fact that I help other's often, so they know I've often nothing to do), and I end up feeling guilty because I'm sure people think I sit here drumming my fingers, reading magazines, which ok I do on times, but when there's nothing else to do and everyone else is up-to-date and don't need helping what am I supposed to do :(  Wouldn't dream of changing my job though as I love my bosses and I'm sure I wouldn't get a better job anywhere else.  Not a bad pay packet either, and we're due for a rise!!

Nothing worse than trying to look busy when you've got nothing to do! If the works done we should be able to go home!
I work for an investment company and I do most of my work in the space of 3 hours so the rest of the time I spend twiddling my thumbs.....won't tell them that though!!

Not everyday but most days my works done by lunch! Im just very efficient!! :)

Well not only is my job soooo boring. I get paid 5 quid an hour which is even worse, and yeah i hardly do anything, but when i do actually vet employees its a right pain in the arse trying to get hold of people etc etc and not only that, im a general dogsbody, a bloody cleaner, a secretary, a data inputter, im the only woman, and the chuffin rest! Plus they dont even pay me for having bank holidays off when its them that decided we are all having them off, even if i want to work for the extra £25, they wont let me and i heard somewhere that its against the law for them not to pay u bank holidays if they dont offer u to work it!! Am i right? Im a single mother with next to no spare money after paying the essentials and £25 is a lot out of my pocket!! AAARGGHGH :(

Well what area do you live in? Perhaps someone on here knows of a better job nearby? I LOVE my job, best job I've ever had, best wage I've ever had and the least hours I've ever worked. :)
- By Brunodog Date 31.03.05 19:52 UTC
I live in Rotherham and i need hours between 9 and 3 cos i got an 8 year old!! I have lotsa qualifications :D Anybody??? Anybody??? Will send u my CV if u want LOL

What about being a medical secretary?  There are usually part-time hours in hospitals (if it's the same as this one) as all the secretaries are disappearing to have babies and then want to come back part-time.  Hospitals usually pay well too.  I didn't have any medical experience when I started here, but you can pick up the terminology dead easy.  It may sound silly but also have you tried looking for part-time jobs in supermarkets?  Some places pay better than £5 an hour, and at least you'd be busy through the day!! Even if it was only stacking shelves, it still makes the day go quicker :D :D :D

Well i must have sent about 10 applications in to my local hospital and havnt heard anything from one of them in the last 2 years!! SAYs a lot about me doesnt it, but apparently, or from what ive heard, they always offer internally before outsiders first! And my local Asda doesnt do the hours i need :(
- By keeley [gb] Date 01.04.05 09:25 UTC
Positions of Secretaries to the Consultants are usually filled internally I suppose, because the cover secretaries have their eye on them and they've done the job before.  Keep an eye out for cover secretaries jobs, although I guess they won't be part-time :(  Wouldn't you get working family tax credit to help with childcare if you went back to work full-time?
- By Brunodog Date 01.04.05 09:30 UTC
Yes and i do now for part time for school holidays but im wondering whether it would be worth it, something to keep thinking about. I should phone Tax office n see if it would be worth the while. Thanks 4 your help xx

I live in a town not too far from you minniedog and I am contracted to work 7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week. HOWEVER the nature of my job really needs me to work on average 9 hours per day, which is still not enough to get my job done. Fancy a swap??? I dread having to take time off as when I return there is 2 weeks work waiting for me and plenty of complaints because I havent been there for 2 weeks!

I would have to issue a warning here, being in a similar situation bought me close to a nervous breakdown!

I was well paid and had taken a first job in local government, however I quickly discovered that I was not expected to DO anything and became increasingly fraustrated when I found I was sent to coventry if I did. I had been a high achiever working in high tech, high pressure industry and had felt I needed some time with less traveling.

Unfortunately I subsequently found that the fact I had a local government employer on my cv made me practically unemployable anywhere else. I got seconded on to other projects etc but things were only worse when I got back to my own dept. In the end they tried to do me for gross misconduct for not doing anything! They didnt succeed in this but did manage to drag it out for over 6 months, which put my stress levels throught the roof. Needless to say we did part and it cost them money but I will never tust what is said at interview again especially if Im to be working for a man who feels threatened by my qualifications!

Be thankful you have a job.  I was made redundant 4 weeks ago & I am bored out of my brain.    I have the worry of wondering whether the Halifax will cover my mortgage payments, using the car is limited so not to waste petrol, I have shows I want to enter etc.....

No wonder people get despondant about searching for work, I have applied for 20 jobs and not had an acknowledgement to one of them!   :(  :(  :(
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 03.04.05 16:05 UTC
Hi Christine My thoughts are with you. Believe me that last instance was the 3rd time I was made redundant in 10 years and it never gets any easier! Instead I decided to start on my own. Now I cant be made redundant - just bankrupt myself :D

I dont know what line of work you are looking for but pick up that phone and start networking something like 50% of all vacancies are never advertised, they are filled by word of mouth. If there is a company that you realy want to work for go knock on the door, make sure that they know you are available!

Sorry But I just can't understand if your not content with your situation why you don't work for yourself.
Surely people in all areas are willing to pay for a dog walker-gardener-cleaner-shopper etc. There must be people who are willing to pay for these jobs to be done for whatever reason.
Think of it, work in your own time do as much or as little as you want and the bonus is all the money belongs to you.

Hi Bazza

That was my thought. However it is a huge step for most people to give up the security of knowing how much will be in the bank at the end of each month.
