I would restrict him to one room so that he can't get to his favourite spot and watch him like a hawk :)

Daisy's advice will certainly stop him doing it upstairs, but I'd be more inclined to find out what is causing this sudden change in behaviour - has anything changed at home recently?  Has somebody come to live with you (or left?) Are you planning a big holiday or event?

no nothing has changed the latest edition was my staffy and that was nearly 2 years ago ive tried keeping him confined to one room but sometimes this is difficult with the kids and 2 other dogs

i woudnt necessarily go back to basics, but i wud praise him and offer a treat when he goes outside.
how do u react when he goes indoors?  even bad attention can seem like good attention to a dog if u are reprimanding him for it.
im sorry i dont know why he would suddenly start doing this.  Could it be related to an anxiety problem?  does he follow u around the house or anything?

thxs for youre reply when he messes i just say to him what have you done i dont shout i just say it in a stern voice he doesnt follow me about any more than usuall and sometimes he can be outside for ages and when he comes in he just squeezes the tiniest one out as if hes just making a point i think that i might confide him to the kitchen as soon as he comes in and keep an eye on him and the minute he tries to do something put him out side straight away i hope its just a phase does anyone know of anything to put down in the place he goes inside to deter him from going in the same place? :)
