hi, my bitch had her pups on weds i have noticed today she is bleeding, but the blood is more of a chocolate colour there is no offensive smell.I have been reading the boards to see if this is normal, but have read a couple of different ones, one says as long as the blood is dark in colour with no offensive smell its fine, the other says if its dark in colour then its not fresh blood which is a bad sign and to consult the vet, could someone please advise which is right, should i be concerned or not please, many many thanks debs

Has your vet done a post natal check on her to check all is alright and there are no puppies remaining in her, and her uterus is going back to normal size? As long as there is no offensive smell then I would say everything is ok. Its normal for them to have a season like discharge after whelping.

Just like women, bitches who've given birth will lose a coloured discharge for 6 weeks or so. If it's fresh bright blood I'd be very concerned, but a dark, non-offensively smelling discharge I wouldn't be.

Hope this helps.
