Is it Wax that is causing it.
If you look inside you may see like a black/brown tar looking substance.

Unfortunately that goes with the terratory of dog ownership! If the drops you have bought don`t do the trick in 24-48 hours get to the vets pronto just in case there is a bit of infection there better to be safe than sorry

Hi rosiemum
Trouble is as soon as you walk in the door Consultation fee.
This is another reason why I use a Herbal & Homeopathic Herbalist.
All my animals are taken care off and his time is free.
But even he will say that if it needs a vet then vet it should be.
He's good like that he won't make false promises.

If the ear isn't too red or inflamed looking, try putting some baby oil or dog ear cleaner, from pet shop, into the ear canal. Fill it up. Hold the dogs head and gently massage the base of the ear for a minute or two. Put a wad of cotton wool into the ear, quite firmly so it won't get shook out immediately. Then let the dog have a good old shake. Remove cotton wad, if its not already gone :D Then wipe all round the ear, where you can reach. Do this a couple of times a day, until you can't see anymore brownish wax, and its stopped making the rattly, gungy sound. Give one last final clean, and then put some ear drops in. Only about 2/3 drops in each ear. Again available from pet shops. Johnsons is a good make.
The thing with ear cleaning is, when you have put stuff into the ear, you must remove it as well. a lot of people just keep putting drops into the ears and don't think to clean them out as well. Once you start to do that. Hey Presto. Lovely clean, sweet ears. Keep a weekly eye on them though as some dogs produce more wax than others, and its better to clean every week than have a dog with poorly ears. Don't be misled by the colour either. Normal dog wax is brownish red. It is not infection or so called 'canker'.
Westie's have the lovely prick ears which are so easy to get into :)
Hope this is some help for you
Anne
thanks for all ur advice the drops have started to work already, the wax is softening and rosie is letting me clean it out....
When i said about consultation , the fee... what i meant was . not that rosie wasnt worth the money, just if i could clear the wax for £3.00 rather than taking her to the vet and he charging £20 and then give me the same drops ...
