wots the difference between this 2 breeds and which one is the best with children want family pet not for breeding

if you go for a shih tzu you are more guaranteed to get a smaller dog as the l/apso seems nowadays to becoming bigger. the shih tzu has a shorter nose. tends to come golden/black mask, black and white, gold and white. thel /apso comes every colour. i have been a dog groomer 30 yrs and i would go for the shih tzu, i had 2 myself while my 3 children grew up.
