Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Wings in coat!...advice!
- By ice_queen Date 23.03.05 15:06 UTC
I'm hoping that someone here will be able to recormend something for one of my dogs coats.

I think it is because she has been spayed but along her sides her coat sticks out to the side (makes it look like she's got wings) and It doesn't look all that good in the ring when all the others have straight coats!  After a bath she has a dressgown put on her and this does keep it down for awhile, but not for long!  I was wondering if there would be anything that would help the coat go straighter like a shampoo or similar!

Thankyou

When you say dressgown do you mean a drycoat from here ?

Drycoats are brilliant if used correctly my cavaliers are little devils for sleeping on their backs & curling their coats so now I use drycoats & they do not come off until they are almost ready to go in the ring. Ann (who makes them)told me they are fine for Shlties & RC''s if their coats are dried & fluffyup before the coat is put on then when it is taken off the coat will fluff up again but stay straight

No I mean the toweling with ties round their belly!  We only keep them on untill they are dry or in hot weather when they get soaked!  I could never have my dogs kept in someing in public, they would never forgive me!!! :D  Plus I hate seeing dogs in coats etc (it's become popular in our breed to have bright red all in ones and I can't stand them!)

Also with using the drycoat, it would fall off as my girl plays rough with the others, which is why I would rather a product, unfortantly hairstraightners and hairspray that works on me, won't be allowed on them!

I noticed alot of the Irish Setters at crufts wearing netting type coats for this purpose.  They arent as bulky as the toweling coats so I imagine would be easier to keep on.

Ive used the gas battery-operated hair straighteners on ours (Loki in particular) who has "kiss curls" all over her back (especially the little DA by her tail :D)

It's fiddly, but easier than trimming the under hairs, to make the top hair lie flat (if you understand what I mean)

Drycoats can't fall off :D my cavaliers have proved that they zoom around like mad things & even play in the car on the ways to shows & being brought up by my GSD they do not play gently or quietly LOL Neither do my friends English Setters & she is converted to using them

It has nothing to do with her being spayed as non of my beardie bitches had the problem It is probably just the way she lays on it

You don't have to totally bath her before shows though & when I had my beardies they only had a complete bath once a month & in between for shows they had their whites washed along with my friends roughs  & they had very thick undercoats

I have a friend who has Shelties & she has been converted to using them & she does quite well at shows with them

She never had this problem before speying and she was speyd end of last year and is 5 now!  I don't want to use a coat king as it will take the coat out, which I don't want to do!  Otherwise I would thin it as I do with aussies (which have abit more coat)

I'm thinking more about dry coats, anyone else going to convince me they're good? :D Somehow I think they will go asfar as the car though!!! :D

Margot, think straighter might be abit hot as setters don't have the double coat so will be touching skin, but might buy some away for me!! :D

You could leave it on her until you get to the shows & take it off when you get there. I know with my Cavaliers I tried everything to stop their coats going haywire & you name it I tried it Then someone who has English Setters suggested the DDs & they have been worth their weight in gold

The material is a mesh so the dog doesn't over heat , for a rough collie you need to get the coat looking as you want & then put the DD on & leave on has long as possible. I do lightly spray with a leave in conditioner just before I pop the coat on, I did a trial run before a show ;)

Have you dried a Coat King on the sticking out bits?

My sister & I have just tackled her CKCS with a Coat King after her coat went all fluffy after she was spayed last september.   Hey presto, one little dog that looks like a young CKCS spaniel again without the bleached out fluffy orange fur!
