can i have some opinions from the people on here who seem very knowledgeable about these things on nature diet. this is what i feed my 10 month old lab on and he is doing great but is there something better i could be doing for him?
- By Isabel Date 22.03.05 17:41 UTC
If he's doing great then I'd say not :)
- By katyb [gb] Date 22.03.05 17:44 UTC
thanx isabel. are the ingredients ok as i was reading the pro plan thread and was shocked as i thought that was a good food.
- By Isabel Date 22.03.05 17:59 UTC
I think you have to make up your own mind, I think a lot of rubbish is spouted about what goes into foods, often this information is disseminated by people with their own agenda, for instance anticapitalism and is quite clearly false and even when the ingredients are as stated what seems to shock some just boils down to squeamishness in the eyes of others.  Some of the dire predictions of "something may happen in the future" to your dogs just sounds like "there be dragons" stuff to me :) but as I say its something you have to decide for yourself but I know if my dog was doing well that would count for an awful lot.

Blooming 'eck Isabel, don't miss 'em and hit the wall now :D

>I think a lot of rubbish is spouted about what goes into foods, often this information is disseminated by people with their own agenda, for instance anticapitalism<

Surely these diet debates are about posters' opinions re. preferred ingredients, personal experiences, physical condition of dogs, etc?  But political persuasion? I can't honestly see what on earth that's got to do with what ANYONE feeds their dogs.

bothered, bewildered and heading off to watch the telly :P

I quite understand Isabel's point, Teri. There are people who are so against Big Business, whatever that conglomeration of companies may manufacture, that they'll turn people away from whatever they produce, no matter how good that product may be. Sad but true.

>Surely these diet debates are about posters' opinions

Very true and that was me giving mine :)
As far as the anticapitalism, many of the sites critisising various dogs foods will sooner or later mention "large profits" as though that had anything to do with the quality of product.  Another popular theme is the number of various products the manufacturers may also deal in as though that had anything to do with the price of fish :)
- By Teri Date 22.03.05 22:27 UTC
You've misquoted me Isabel  which misrepresents what I was referring to, ie:-

>Surely these diet debates are about posters' opinions re. preferred ingredients, personal experiences, physical condition of dogs, etc?<

However touche, as obviously I misinterpreted YOUR original point ;)  I read that to be a reference to those who posted on CD that have concerns about the quality of ingredients used in some canine diets (silly me ) - hence the confusion <LOL>

Regards, Teri :)

At least we all now know that 95% of the pet food manufactured in the UK uses ingredients passed as being fit for human consumption.
:)

Hi JG,

I'm confused again   Oh well, perhaps that's just a regular state of mind for me :D  We all seem to like ND which of course is what the thread's about - Isabel gave a reply which - wait for it - "confused me" <LOL> and I now realise that I got the wrong end of the stick.  You're reply has just returned me to my "bothered and bewildered state of pre-telly chill out", (except there's nothing on I want to watch now :D ) - because I still thought we were talking Nature Diet and I don't recall anyone, certainly not me, ever disputing its quality ....

Anyway, as I have NO idea where this is going, I'll just say a resounding "Let's give it up for Nature Diet" ;)

Regards, Teri

I can't comment on Naturediet, cos I've never bought it - not at the price they charge around here (63p for teeny tiny pack! )
- By Isabel Date 22.03.05 22:50 UTC
MMMMmmm you've lost me a bit now, not sure how the other bit of the quote changes things  but never mind I think we are maybe agreeing :).  As you spotted I wasn't critisising those that have concerns about the ingredients but rather those that have caused them to feel, as I see it :), uneccessary  concerns by setting up web sites with often exagerated and inaccurate claims. As I say just my opinion ;)

    You know what, I kinda like the feeling

I feed mine 'raw' food - but I'm not an 'extremist' :) I always have Nature Diet in the cupboard and feed it when I'm in a hurry etc. The dogs always have it when they go into the kennels. I see it as the next best thing to feeding raw :)

Ditto. Nature Diet is for when I've forgotten to get raw food out of the freezer, unless I can get to the supermarket for 'fresh' chicken wings.
- By ice_cosmos Date 22.03.05 18:43 UTC
I'm the same - I feed mine raw, but if we go camping etc then I take naturediet with us :)

I have Min my oldie on it and the two youngsters always look so peed of when they look in their bowls full of JWB compared to Min's bowl of yummy ND !

Min is in cracking condition for a 14 1/2 yr old and I do put part of that down to the ND ! :)

I have my 15 yo rescue yorkie, who I've had for 4 months, on Naturediet (she won't eat dry food) and she seems to have dropped years off since I got her - I put a lot of this down to the food.  She's the first dog I've fed on it and had to go looking for it, but she certainly won't be the last.  She came with loads of tins of Pedigree senior which she now won't touch at all - and who could blame her ;).

My other two much younger and bigger rescue dogs are on JWB - I also think that has done much for them, compared to their previous food  - but I think they are waiting for the day they also get Naturediet .... (although I do give them a bit now and them) :)
- By Teri Date 22.03.05 19:18 UTC
Hi Katyb,

ND is a great food and seems to be popular with just about everyone whether as a stand-alone diet or a stand-by one :)  I've used it on and off regularly for all of mine (tend to keep it as a standy-by now for faddy eating periods) but I'd have no hesitation recommending it to anyone because I've also used it for one dog as the main diet.  The fact that your youngster is doing so well on it is what matters most anyway - as they say, the proof of the pudding .....

regards, Teri :)

Is nature diet ok for pups, as I used to feed Mr B on it and he thrived. Used to mix it with his normal JWB and stuff it into a kong.
- By ice_cosmos Date 23.03.05 09:11 UTC
Naturediet do a puppy version :)
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 23.03.05 09:16 UTC
Excellent! Back off to the pet shop. We are now on first name terms.
- By katyb [gb] Date 23.03.05 11:46 UTC
sorry to add further complication but nature diet reccommend that at 6 months you feed the adult food for a dog of my weight well my dogs weight not my weight lol anyway so since 6 months i dutifully moved him onto the adul version of nature diet and like i said he is fine and he looks in better condition than his 2 litter sisters who are fed eukanuba i think so i was quite happy but both the pet shop owner and the vet nearly fainted when i said he was on the adult food so i emailed nature diet and they assured me he would be fine on the adult one. also i dont feed him quite as much as they suggest but he does have a few treats eek! and also has a roast dinner on a sunday and he is a nice weight so i dont feel the need to give him as much as they say is that ok? first time neurotic dog owner here!
- By Teri Date 23.03.05 12:16 UTC
Hi Katyb,

Most feeding guides are just that - an estimate ;)  Personally I've not had a dog yet that was able to eat as much as the recommended daily amount (not that they wouldn't snaffle it up but they would be FAT  )

As to changing at 6 months onto adult, most food manufacturers have a guideline specific to their own food and if ND's is 6 months that's the advice I'd take - although some other companies I think encourage higher protein levels for too long a period - but hey, that's a different thread :P

It sounds like you're doing everything absolutely right!
Regards, Teri :)

thanx teri, i just worry about him all the time as he is my first lol although i dont remember being this concerned about my first baby when he was sucking wotsits at 6 months!!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 23.03.05 13:29 UTC
As someone else said a while ago - once upon a time there wasn't any dog food, let alone puppy food :D Tara went 'raw' at 14 weeks - there is no puppy with raw :D :D
