Hello, perhaps you could give me some advice.  I am torn between purchasing a pedigree or crossbreed.  If i decide on a pedigree, it seems fairly easy to find a reputable breeder.  If I however want a crossbreed, where would I begin to look for one aftr all the dreadful stories I am reading about puppy farms. I am based in Herts area.
Thanks.

The best place to look for a cross breed is a rescue centre there are loads there needing loving homes

The only merit that I could see in getting a crossbreed is that it MIGHT be cheaper than a pedigree dog.

Why are you thinking of a crossbreed?  Is it because you are undecided about one breed or another?    You aren't going to find a good, reputable breeder, and you will have to deal with puppy farmers/pet shops :(

If I were in your shoes, I would have to decide on one particular breed, and then go for it, from a reputable breeder.   You have joined CD, so why not ask questions (doesn't matter how silly they seem, we'll answer) until you can narrow your choice down to one particular breed.

Good luck

I am having the same problem. I want another cross breed but my partner wants a pedigree.
I got my dog from the Animal Welfare Trust in Watford and he was a super dog (collie X GSD).

Just on what everyone's said.  If you do go for a crossbreed, have alook at rescuing, you can find litter's in rescues if you want an 8 week old puppy still as a cross.

If you go for a pedigree, choose the breed, research the breed and go for a reputable breeder or contact the breed rescue if you would like to rescue a dog, pedigree or not!

One more idea Chocolate...

Cross breeds usually have the characteristics of their parent breeds.  If you don't like Bishons, for example, you wouldn't want as your cross's parent.  The pairings are limitless in crosses...you may want to narrow it down to what you absolutely don't want and then go from there.  :)

Many crossbreed dogs find themselves in rescue through no fault of their own.  I have 2 rescue dogs and 2 pedigrees.  The crossbreeds have always been much healthier due to what I have been told is a hybrid vigor.  In addition, I think the fact that you have given a dog a second chance is a wonderful thing.  I must say that having adopted dogs from rescue centres and taken them from unsuitable homes, I think you will be very lucky to find out the full background of an adult rescue dog.  Perhaps if you want a puppy then you may be luckier but you can never tell what the lovely little bundle of fun is going to turn into as many bitches turn up in rescue already pregnant with no sign of the father!!!  I think you should follow your heart.  Pedigree or mutts, dogs are a wonderful experience if cared for properly.  I think the fact that you are doing your research is a good thing as too many people acquire dogs only to find out there is an awful lot of work involved.  To me, dogs are a way of life!!!!
