She has had the all clear from the vet from her struvite crystals and is off all medication. Have read Give Your Dog A Bone but a little puzzled still. Starchy meal, Grain meal and Milk meal, these have no meat content. How does this effect the quantity of RMB's on those days. The Milk day,do I weigh the egg and milk and deduct this weight from the daily total quantity of food?

So many supplements, do you feed them all?

Read another book yesterday Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats. This book differs from the first as there are no grains, cereals or dairy besides eggs. Any opinions as which method is best?

Thanks
Pat

Pat there is no best method, you are doing the best for your dog by feeding her a raw, species appropriate diet to begin with,i know owners who dont feed grains or dairy and others who do. I have both books you mentioned and i take bits from both.

Dogs do not need grains or dairy products, but if your dog benefits from these in some way you could try adding them, but you dont have to :) I dont feed any grains, there are enough in the small amount of dry food i feed,my dogs get the odd bowl of milk a few times per week, only because they love it,i also add an egg 2-3 times per week :)

Thanks a lot. I may leave out the oats as tried Gabi on oats on the first day and she was not keen, if this is not vital. Will try rice instead and see if thats received any better. She is enjoying her meat, offal and RMB's and even the vegies. This is only her 3rd day but going very well. Only one problem trying to stop her from helping herself whilst I'm preparing the food. Another baby gate for the kitchen door may be required. Got a good tip from somewhere on the web, to make the vegies in batches, then putting into muffin tins and freezing. When frozen tip out bag and replace bags into the freezer. I am hoping that this new diet will help with Gabi's many health problems as she has spent the first twelve months of life on anti-biotics. I have to take a water sample to the vets next week so fingers crossed. If the struvite has returned she would have to go back to the horrible special diet. Will keep you updated.

Thanks
Pat

If she has been on antibiotics for so long you really should be giving probiotic capsules, available from health food shops, you must return the good bacteria that the antibiotics have destroyed. Dont think there would be any need to put her back on the horrible special diet!! This would be my last resort,You would be taking a step backwards if you put her back on it :( You could also supplement with cranberry capsules or powder, this is wonderful for anything bladder related :)

I belong to a wonderful doggy nutrition site ,the members there will definately be able to help you in regards to the struvite, you should also be able to find plenty of info in the archives. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/K9Kitchen/

Gaby, have you seen this site this seems to stress the importance of monitoring for the infection recurring as the most effective method of prevention.  If the stones do reoccur it does seem that the prescription diet is then the best course of action.  Fingers crossed :)

Hi peacebabe :)

What breed of dog do you have?

I give 50mg bcomplex and with the digestive enzymes i give the normal human grade ones you can buy at the health shop, here is what the enzymes contain,so you know what to look out for:protease....lipase....alpha amylase..cellulase...lactase...papain. They each help digest different foods. protease/protein. lipase/fats amylase/carbs.

I give both of them(1 of each) straight after my dogs have eaten. It is not advised to give b vitamins on an empty stomach as it can cause nausea!

There  is this one particular spot on our walks where the pigeons would roost, there was piles of poop underneath them, about 100 metres before we reached the spot my dogs used to take off and scarf down as much as they could before i got there! There was also duck poop and the odd cat turd
Anyway 3 days after i started giving the b and enzymes we went back to the pigeon walk and they completely ignored the poop,i was utterly amazed,i didnt think it was going to work that quickly and easily :D They havnt touched poop since, this was around 6mths. ago. The only other thing i've added is wheatgrass,i grow it myself in a little pot and the dogs can graze on it whenever they want.

Hope i've helped a little,anything else you need to know,just ask :)

What is the problem, Rose?
- By gaby [gb] Date 24.03.05 10:46 UTC
As a start I have Gabi on Brewers yeast, vit c, kelp, omega 3 capsules, garlic and fenugreek, mixed veg tablets, probiotic and digestive enzymes. Am I missing anything? Asked about the supplements as it seems a lot? Maybe I could get most of these things in Keepers Mix and save all the individual items. Gabi is not very good at taking pills. I have read that more roughage is good for Anal Gland problems(yet another problem of Gabi's). Is this the Veg part of the diet or the grains or both? Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks
Pat
