I am feeling very fortunate to have got myself a little beagle which my daughter is going to show for me.  The thing is we have been arguing all afternoon do you run around the ring or do you walk.  Also it shows two types of showing stacking or freestanding.  The spots are done freestanding so it would probably be more natural any advice gratefully recieved.  In all the excitement of getting her I forgot to ask the few fundamental quistions.  :)

I would think that thing to do would be to watch the judging at some champ show to give the best indication. As far as I can remember, Beagles are stacked, and trotted briskly.

Yes I know but hounds are not on the same day as utility except Bath which is beagle pups first show.  I have got a litter of pups which is why I am came on here to ask the quistion as obviously I cant leave my bitch for too long!

It really depends on the dog. They are generally a stacked breed (there's one or two people who free-stand them) Most of them are run but it depends on the dog itself, if it is happy running then do that but if it jumps around walk with it and build up the speed as it starts behaving better. Who did you get your puppy from?

ok you will move at the pace of a dog!  If the dogs a walking pace, walk, if the dog trots at a running pace, run.

When it comes to standing, whatever is better for you and THE DOG!  I personall would stack because you can hide many faults and have more control of the dog, however if the dog will freestand, then free stand them!

I am sure you know, but as no=one has mentioned it they are a table dog, so it will need to learn to be stacked on the table at least :D

Got to confess Brainless unless the breeder had shown them on the table I wouldnt have realised :) :)

Thanks for your advice I will now get daughter to commence training it has been a long while since I bought a puppy in and I never realised how difficult it is to pick one out.

Hi, great to hear there's another beagle owner on CD!  The majority of people do stack their beagles although we do try and freestand ours because it does look more natural.  However, there are times, maybe when she's a bit bored when she won't always keep her tail up so we have to stack her then.   If you watch people showing beagles, most of them do run with their dogs but I have heard people say that a fast walk is quite enough because if you move too fast it throws their front movement out - it depends on the individual dog.     Where did you get yours from and where's about do you live?

Does your breeder show? They would be the first port of call on this. Also did you see the group winner at Crufts? Copy that if all else fails. The Beagle club often have their breed shows in my village so we might meet up one day! :-D

The person who we got her from in Lincolnshire does not have beagles as her first breed they are more her husbands so she only said about standing them on the table. She obviously knows about them but she prefers her own breed.  We had decided against beagles for a long time because we were told you cant them back then on the last day of crufts we spoke to a man who had gone from dallies to beagles and he said as they were pack animals so would follow our dallies back to us.  All the family adore them and I must say we are totally smitten with her.  Dont know if we will have much success but she has a good pedigree and we were advised she was the best of the bunch so who knows!  I will feel happier once I have a bit more knowledge behind me I have read loads of books but that is not the same as speaking to people.  We are actually in Cambridgeshire so I hope to see some of you at shows. :)  Our debut being Bath!

I don't know where about in Cambs you are, but the hound club of east anglia are holding an open show on May 15th at Thornhaugh and there will be a few of us there with beagles - if you're interested in entering or just going for a day out.

Thanks Sarah but Beagle pup is going to be too young to enter she scraps into bath by a few days.  I think I may trot along though to have a look so I can have a breakdown about how she looks :) I have got to become a member of a beagle club.  Dalmatians have been my life for so long I am finding it hard to believe I have finally got my little dot. I have spent a fortune on beagle stuff on ebay this week so hubby is going to have a breakdown. :)
