can someone hellp me! i have a 5month old golden retriever and he is still not housetrained. he is perfectly paper trained but when he's outside he will come back in to go to the toilet, ive tried evrything from putting paper outside to one of them scented things. we have also tried slowly moving the paper along but its difficult as you have to go through the garage to get to the garden, and just waiting and waiting outside for him to maybe get desperate and just go, but he will wait till we move the paper back till he goes.
he is a clever dog though, he noes sit paw heel stay down and round (runs around you) and learnt these all very quickly but i just dont know why i am having such problems getting him properly housetrained.
has anyone got any ideas for me?? please!!!

Unfortunately you've learned that all paper-training does is teach a pup that it's acceptable to mess indoors. :(

The best thing to do is take up all the paper and go right back to basics, treating him like an 8-week old puppy. Take him outside to the garden every time you think he might need to toilet and stay with him until he performs. When he starts to 'go', give him the keyword you want to use ('busy', 'hurry up', 'be clean' or whatever), then give him lots of praise when he's finished. It'll take a while to retrain him, but if you're consistent you'll get there. Good luck!

Ah...the joys of paper training.  :)  You'll need to train your dog to go outside now.  Paper training is very convenient but can be a nightmare when you try to switch over.  Good luck.  :)

hi, im new to the group but had the exact same problem with my westie pup. By 6mnths i was tearing my hair out as she was perfect on the paper but would come in from outside to do it on the paper. I have since learned that it is only a stop gap and doesnt really help in the long run. I had to re-train charlie to go outside by taking her out as often as possible. They usually need after play time and obviously after drinks and food. Watch for signs such as circling and sniffing at a spot and try and catch them with a firm "NO" Try and get them to finish outside with lots of praise. I found that associating toilet with a word, mine is "pee-pee" works and now she does it on comand.I know everyone says take them out as often as possible but this is much better than trying to move from paper to outside. It took me until Charlie was almost 11 mnths to train her. It is frustrating but remember they are still learning to hold their toilet which comes with time. Goodluck and keep it up!!! it does pay off

i would suggest the same putting him outside evry time you think hes gonna go and praise him when hes finished or even try putting the paper in the garage and then into the garden, once he has been a few times outside he will start to want to go outside. also i would suggest using some puppy deoderising cleaner on the floor where the paper go's as he might still be able to smell it so he will always go there. after a while with ours we took her paper away and she know that was the only place she was aloud to go and soon started holing on till she went out side.
also let him outside every hour or so if posssible he should start to get the hang of it.
