Topic Dog Boards / Health / Stronghold for ear mites in puppy?
- By sueshells [gb] Date 16.03.05 00:42 UTC
Hi - hope you can help us. We have a 5 month old Toy Poodle puppy which showed all the symptoms of ear mites and came from a breeder who also kept cats. Our vet diagnosed ear mites and prescribed Stronghold. The puppy is no better and we have noticed that the Stronghold packet only indicates that it is for use on ear mites in cats.
Any comments, suggestions, experiences please??

Hi,

I would go back to the vet and ask as you have paid for something that's meant to work on earmites in dogs as well.

Are the ears red or smelly?  Is the dog scratching?  My older lab has exceptionally white clean ears but the younger one has dark dirty looking ears although they are actually fine!!!(confirmed by a vet that has always had labs).  They have both had stronghold and it was the only time that the younger dog had white clean looking ears.  As for ticks, they have never had a tick in their life until they had stronghold applied???  I wonder if there was something in it that actually attracted them?

Hi Sueshells

Have you got a cat or another dog who may be reinfecting your puppy with mites? Its very common for ear mites to be passed from cats. The stronghold should have worked but as it's a one off treatment for ear mites it will need to be repeated if there is any chance of reinfection.

Gibson had ear mites so bad when he was found that he had to have 2 treatments at the vets.  According to the vet, take it for what it's worth, the mites were so many and so crowded that the medicine didn't make it far enough down into the ear to kill them all.  I personally think that he just didn't do it well enough the first time.  :)

Regardless...you've paid for a treatment and did what the vet said...contact the vet and see what they say.

Thanks for your advice. We don't have a cat but do have another dog - a standard poodle - but he never seems to have any problems with his ears ( apart from the fact that they have fur growing in them! ). We have two doses of Stronghold left so will try another application and if that doesn't do the trick we will accost the vet!!
