Has anyone had a case of one dog having kc and the others not getting it. I've got three collies and the middle one has got a very mild case of kc. We are now half way through week 2 and the others, 9 mths and 10 yrs, are showing no sign. I thought it was really contagious.

Any ideas?

Hi Claire

It is possible for only one to get it, but it is also possible that it will not show on the others for another week or two.  One of mine had it very mild for over two weeks and the other one got it really badly just after.

If you don't already know, give the one with kc childrens Benylin at the childrens dose, won't cure it but it really helps the symptoms.  I also gave honey and yoghurt too.

Hi Claire, yes it is possible.   Bailey & Tia brought back kc from Malvern last year. Bailey coughed for half day Tia coughed for a day, and that was it.  BUT Emma took very badly to it and had kc for nearly 5 weeks and ended up going on AB's for secondary infection.  Penny did not show any signs at all. I gave them all Pavocol-D diabetic cough mixture, great taste, no sugar.

Yes...there are 3 different strains of KC.  The vaccine covers 1 strain only.  I've had fosters that come in with KC and each time, the only 2 that didn't get it were the ones not vaccinated for it.  Go figure.

As I've said before :D Kayla had kc back in December, most likely that she picked it up at a show, and she had it for about a week really bad and we didn't walk her outside or go to any shows or training for 3 weeks.
In this whole time our 6 year old Chloe showed absolutley no signs of it, maybe partly due to the fact that evreytime Kay coughed, Chloe would give her the most filthy look and then leave the room :D !!!!
So if you are lucky then no, all your dogs won't be affected :)

Last yr my young male came down with it but only one of my other dogs went down with it, the rest didn`t :)
Prviously tho, when I used to vac/booster my other dogs went down with it one after the other! There are many strains of kennel cough & it is very contagious but like us when colds/flu are around, some of us get it & some of us don`t.
