Few youngsters or puppies are going to be happy with that length of time and they will get into all sorts of trouble left that long.
An adult greyhound might suit though and there are loads of these lovely wannabe couch potatoes looking for new homes .... and couches. :)

Certainly not a puppy, unless you're going to arrange for someone to come in a couple of times during the day to feed, clean and play with it.

Definitely not wise to leave a puppy that long, however, i have a 4 year old Westie and a 1 year old Weimaraner who are alone in the house from 8.40 til 2pm, and they are fine, i keep them in the kitchen. My westie doesnt seem to mind one bit, but my Weimaraner is an energetic dog who craves attention so as soon as i get in i have to take him for a long walk and i definitely wouldnt leave him for longer than i do because he starts to chew things.
Most dogs are adaptable to different schedules but it would be difficult for you to raise a puppy properly given that amount of time away from the home. I would suggest to you that you research various breeds that appeal to you and then contact that breeds rescue, finding a dog that's aged a year or more and trained somewhat. Good luck! :)
Could you get a dogwalker/pet sitter to call in twice a day to play with the pup and clean up and let him out into garden.
I had a dog walker come into my beagle pup when I worked 4 hours in an afternoon so he was left no longer than two hours, beagles like to be with their pack and get distressed when left.
I now am self emp as a dog walker myself and my boy comes with me and walks with the other dogs and is happy
For a decent dog walker/carer
try www.dogsit.com
thats the site for National Association of registered Petsitters.
However no caring breeder would sell you a pup unless you have arrangements in place for breaking up the time any pup was leftalso you might have to take a few weeks of work to get the pup into its toileting routine. Most dogs I have found four hours max is the most they can be happily left.

I have cockers and personally I don't think they cope too well on their own for long periods of time, they thrive on human company and can get very destructive when left alone!
I agree with jas about the adult Greyhound. Ex-racers are overflowing in rescue centres and make ideal pets. Or maybe another older rescue who just needs a comfy place to sleep and would relish the daytime peace! Just don't get a border collie ok! :-)
