Steady, I ment, of the dog coat varity. Is this a painful procedure, again I ment for the dog not the groomer.

I used to hand strip a friends Border Terrier, the only thing that was a problem
was getting her to stand still long enough to do it :D
She didn't find it painful, she quite enjoyed all the attention she got whilst it was done.

How's your mum's Sheltie Emma?

I hand strip my mini schnauzer, again he doesn't mind being stripped - but he does get frustrated if you do it for too long.

I tend to keep the knife at hand (stripping knife.. not any other lol) and if he is being nice and quiet ill sit in front of the tv and strip him for maybe 10-15 mins, this a couple of times a week tends to keep on top of it.

I then let my groomer bother about his booties and beard etc

As long as you do it properly it shouldn't hurt, the only way i can think it might hurt is if you hold the hair on the knife and pull - which would tug the hair out instead of just stripping the downy hair.

There is a lot of information on the internet about grooming/stipping dogs, you could search for a guide on how to strip your breed correctly.

Not in the slightest bit painful if the coat is ready to come out.  Mine are asleep in front of me flat on their sides when I do it, waking them up to turn them over is the only thing that worries them!
