Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Me to! I need help with a crying puppy

I have a beautiful dobe puppy aged 13 weeks, I have got invaluable advice from this site before so I hoping some one can help me with this.
My puppy is happy and calm during the day he is not caged at all in the day because I am at home, however I do cage him at night but he is right by my bed, up till recently he has been fine he would wake me up at about 4am to go the loo, I would go downstairs let him out , and then he would come back in straight up the stairs and put himself back in the cage. but the last few nights he has cried  on and off all night! he is in the cage curled up just whimpering and crying, I talk to him, I stroke him throught the cage. I though it was a comfort thing so I put a hot waterbottle in there he didn,t like it, I have put one of my old jumpers in there that didn't do any good. last night was so bad I opened the cage, but he didn,t want to come out! so I just lay there stroking him. This morning though he up and running around and full of energy
Why is my pup so unhappy at night ?

Hi,

I would hazard a guess that by stroking him when he is whinging, you are rewarding this behaviour and thus the more you do this, the more he will whinge.  My advice would be to simply ignore him when he is doing this and nip it in the bud now - you might need some ear plugs for a while !  It doesn't sound as if there is any reason for this if he seems well in himself at all other times, other than he is wanting attention.  He's only a baby and still learning the routines...I'm sure that before long he'll be perfectly happy to settle all night. If you are anxious he could well pick up on this and this could make him feel insecure - make some great big sighing and snoring noises to reasure him, rather than touching him ( this isn't as daft as it sounds ! ) - he'll soon settle down I'm sure -  Good luck !
