Could anyone advise me as to how to stop my two year old Westie trying to attack other dogs, he is fine with a bitch, he just hates other male dogs, having being bitten when he was younger. It doesnt matter how big they are.I have taken him to dog classes, but to no avail.

Is he castrated?  If not castration may help and calm him down a bit.

Hi Guest,

Regular training classes are not usually able to address dog aggression problems - apart from ones able to offer you one-to-one advice and training with him - but certainly not much help if it is only as part of a general obedience class environment.  Even then, the trainer would need to have specific training themselves in canine behaviour to be able to assess why he is behaving as he does.

As Anna suggested, castration may help - but it is no guarantee as when a behaviour has become deep rooted it is then a "learned response" and even if it was initially hormone driven (which is impossible to tell now) it has probably become a habit with him :(  I'd try and find a recommended trainer through the UK Registry of Canine Behaviourists.  Your vet should be able to assist you and if your dog is insured several different companies include a provision for professional referral to such expert help.

HTH, Good luck,  Teri :)
