Hi Maddie,

How old is your dog - just a puppy?  When my pups have their first innoculation they go out on a lead after the first week has lapsed to somewhere non-doggy like a village shopping precinct.  They will have worn collars and leads before that just to get used to the feeling of them but not to be led around on - even in the garden.

I know some people do things differently and possibly most practice in the house and then garden/yard etc but I always think the fact that their first trip into the proper outside world (when they're actually being put onto the ground as opposed to previously being carried) is so interesting that they hardly notice their leads ;)  Whereas the garden/yard etc is a place already known to them and so it frustrates them being *restrained* in their usual play area.
Just my experience tho' of what works for me and mine!

HTH, regards, Teri :)

How old is you dog?  If it's still a puppy then I'd keep up with the back yard work untill he's been innoculated and you can walk him on the pavement.  Untill then though, don't forget to take him out in your arms so he can get used to the noises, smells and sights of the big wide world.  In the back yard just leave the lead attached while you play a really good game with him to start with, so he can get used to it, then use it to encourage him to walk towards you and then reward him for coming willingly.  He'll soon forget the initial struggle, especially if you're patient and consistent with him.

If he's an adult - how long have you had him and has he been used to being on a lead before?  Has he been checked by a vet - he may have hurt his neck at some time, and this needs to be rules out first.
