Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / MY SPRINGER WON'T STOP EATING!!!
- By VixNix [gb] Date 09.03.05 12:30 UTC
My Springer Spaniel is nearly 2 years old and she won't stop eating!!!! I feed her twice a day and give her treats during the evening. She is always hungry and always begging for food!! Even after she has just been fed!

Although I don't let her have everything she wants (I don't want her to get fat) I'm sure she would carry on eating and eating if I did. And she will eat anything that I do give her.

She gets lots and lots of exercise and loads of attention and has been to the vets recently so I know she is healthy. But she is like a dustbin.

Does anyone have any experience of Springers eating like this and is it normal???

Hi Vikki :)

If you are feeding a commercial diet, what brand? What kind of treats do you give?

Hi Vikki,

Growing up I had a Springer and I also have one now-and they would both eat all day if they could-dog food, cat food, fish food, rabbit food-they're not fussy, my current male in particular!  What food are you currently feeding her on?  I ask as I found a slight improvement in my dog when I changed him onto a more "wholesome" food, i.e. I now feed a combination of Burns & Naturediet which seems to fill him up a bit more and for a bit longer.  However, in my experience Springers are intrinsically a greedy, food-orientated breed so I wouldn't worry that her behaviour is abnormal!  :)

Sounds just like all the dogs I know! Dogs are 'hard-wired' by nature to eat whenever food's available, just in case there's no more for several days. The huge majority simply don't 'do' full!

Hi JG,

If only that were true of BSDs - they commonly seem to see food as a take or leave option if it's during any month with an "r" in it :D  Although thankfully with maturity (years then  ) they usually improve.

Having said that my pup is clearly "hard-wired" in the food department and after years of finnicky, picky eaters it's absolute bliss :P  -  long may it continue!

Regards, Teri :)
