Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog shows can anyone go....
- By Reefer [gb] Date 13.03.02 19:06 UTC
Great joy excitement I have discovered a dog show near me (got it of an internet site), however, I need to double check can anybody just go to have a look? I know people can go to Crufts (because I've been to Discover Dogs) etc and this is the best way to meet people with the breed you want (and it's local) - but how do you tell that a show is 'open to the public' or are all of them:D
- By Pammy [gb] Date 13.03.02 19:21 UTC
Anyone can go to a dog show - you may have to pay an entry fee - but it's not usually much - if it's an open show. You can't take your dog though - but do go along and have a watch. It's great fun.
Where abouts r u based - we might be able to tell you of more coming up.

Can anyone go to the WELKS at The Three Counties Show Ground on April 26th?

Fiona

Also could we take Holly with us?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 13.03.02 21:40 UTC
Yes you can go but Holly can not unless she is enterered in the show. Hope you enjoy it. Some championship shows have a tent for unentered dogs and usualy are run by a dog charity who ask for a donation for looking after your dog whilst you are in the show ground. JH

Hi Fiona,

Just thought I'd let you know (in case you were hoping) there are no Mal classes at WELKS. Probably will be a few entered in AVNSC but obviously nowhere near as many as there would be if we had classes.

If you want to go for the Mal classes there's Birmingham National on 10th May (I won't be going though :( ) or Southern Counties on 2nd June.

Thanks Pammy
I am based in North Notts and am planning to go to the show coming up at Newark showground on the 2nd April.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 13.03.02 22:02 UTC
Hi Reefer, Notts Showground is my local. April the 2nd is a Tuesday what is the show that is on then? Can't find one and I attend most that are held there. If your fingers slipped and it is a different date and I am going I will meet you and let you know what is going on. Jackie H
- By Reefer [gb] Date 13.03.02 22:12 UTC
I have just been back to check and I definately have the date right, I found it under a search for Pulik, I have been back the web address is www.dogshows.co.uk (don't know how to do it as a link). It is the Yorkshire and North Midlands Working and Pastoral Open Show. Don't tell me I have now found a very limited entry show. I did think the date was strange being a Tuesday but hey what do I know........going back to check again now........
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 13.03.02 22:21 UTC
Ah, Yes, it is a group show not an open show. There are 7 groups, Working/Pastoral/Hound/Terrier/Gundog/Toy & Utility. The show you are going to will only have dogs on show that are from the Working or Pastoral group and as I have Hounds I will not be there. However it should be interesting and will be run much the same as a general open show or come to that a championship show. Hope you enjoy yourself and hope I see you there some time in the future. Jackie H

Thanks Jackie
How would I find out when the next show is going to be there? I only happened on this one by chance, where do these events get advertised??
- By Jackie H [us] Date 14.03.02 07:32 UTC
Hi Reefer, shows are advertised in the dog papers Dog World & Our Dogs and also on a good few web sites, (I will see if I can find a few for you) or try entering (dog shows or Newark & Notts Showground) into Google. Most people who show have diarys that list most of the shows for the year.
There is a open show at the N & N showground on the 24th March (N. Lincs Dog Club) & Friday the 29th March (Eastwood) If you let me know what breeds you are interested in I will see if they are scheduled to be there.
Hope I'm not talking down to you, if so forgive, don't know how much you know of the showing game. Jackie H

Me I know nothing:D Well a part from Discover Dogs which I know isn't a show but is for people to come and have a look at different breeds. I am particularly interested in the Hungarian Puli, but willing to look at anything! One of the other reasons for going is I want to show my daughter showing. So that's why I posted the question to see if the general public can gate crash:) Is the one on the 24th on all day?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.03.02 10:38 UTC
There are a lot of activities especially for young people, run by the Young Kennel Club arm of the Kennel Club. they have clases for show handling , Agility and Obedience. They even run camps where the kids can take their dogs and get to do all the different activities with them.

There are two weekly Dog Papers (both have websites) called 'Dog world' and 'Our Dogs' they both cost £1.60 9 if ordered through your newsagents (can be ordered on subscription to your door by post, but its dearer). People that show usually by one or both of these, and all the shows are advertised in there.

The papers also have breed note columns for each breed, and the show results and critiques of the winning dogs are in there. also regular columns including Obedience, Rescue, and other canine related news!

There are a small number of events listed on the Champdogs Diary.

The diary is free and members of the main Champdogs site can use this link to add details of any event they are involved with.

Reefer, The Hungarian Puli is not a very common breed, I don't mean they are refined in their manners I mean there are not that many of them and the two shows I mentioned do not have them classified, however as they are a working breed it is likley that they will be at the show you first mentioned. as Brainless has said there are lots of activities for juniors so jump in their attend some shows to get the idea and off you go. If you have not bought your pup yet be sure to tell the breeder you chose that you want to show and you want lots of help. all the best Jackie H
The Hungarian Puli Club of Great Britain sec. is a Mr. S. Philpott and his phone number is 01453 827638 he should be able to tell you of shows that the Puli can be seen also he will be able to let you know who will have puppies this year.

Your telling me they're not common! Talk about endless search! I have put a post on searching and ever since then when I have logged on I've had new mail got all excited - and then blow me it's Amazon or someone like it. Anyway I am going to buy the papers mentioned. I am definately going to the show on the 2nd as Pulik are mentioned. I might pop to the other on the 24th, I'll find out about it and check on timings, my daughter does a martial arts class and they are coming upto grading so I have to fit in with that (they have better social lives than me!). Jackie what sort of 'hounds' do you have and I'll look out for you:D You have cetainly put my mind at rest that you don't mind 'snoopers', thanks.

Yours endlessly searching for the uncommon dog.......

Reefer, I am owned by the same breed as Brainless (Elkhound) and I will have with me a shameless 17 month hooligan called Solomon, amongst other things, by me, and Kestos So Wise at Thordell by the Kennel Club and if ever a creature was miss named it's him. Wise! He will be embarrassing me in the AVNSC & AV Hound classes in Open because ther is no other class for him, making it even more embarrassing. Please feel free to ask me what I'm talking about if I've lost you, only don't ask why I do it, I have no idea, mad I supose. Jackie H
- By Reefer [gb] Date 14.03.02 19:18 UTC
Hello Jackie
Right don't laugh (or be offended), didn't have a clue what an Elkhound looked like but did have a vision in mind - a kind of Deerhound IWH short haired leggy sort of version mmmmmmWRONG:D I keep my A-Z of Dogs that I got free this month handy so I can look up dogs when people mention them (it's good for the pictures but a bit short on any other info). I think wiseness comes with age or I'm hoping so...............but sorry you have totally lost me with the AVNSC & AV bit:) But at least I know what sort of dog to look for would have been loking at totally the wrong thing.....

By the way in the guide it only gives your breed 2 dots out of four (four being a lot) for excercise I am not convinced by this (one of the reasons I am not sure about the guides usefullness) they don't look like they'd only want a medium amount of exercise but hey I didn't even know what they looked like and very handsome too:)
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 14.03.02 20:45 UTC
AVNSC Any Variety(of dog) Not Separately Classified - AV Any Variety
No Elkhounds don't need lots of exercise but they don't need lot of food either, don't need much grooming but do need owners who are able to negotiate terms with them. Jackie H
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.03.02 21:57 UTC
Elkhounds are happy with whatever amount of excersise they get, they can take unlimited amounts once adult, but are quite happy with a lot les, but watch the food, LOL!!!
- By Reefer [gb] Date 14.03.02 22:13 UTC
These dogs are sounding more and more like my children every post - especially the negociating part:D And they look great........bit large for this time round though.

Definately will look out for them in any shows though (especially one that looks a bit like a hooligan with Wise tendencies and a blushing pet human somewhere near by!)

By the way have been in touch with a breeder and going to meet her soon with her 7 Pulik some people are just greedy:D I'll let you know what their manners are like Jackie!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.03.02 21:54 UTC
Jackie and i both own Elkhounds, which are spitz, but owing to being a non retrieving (Well Elg/Moose are a bit big to retrieve) hunting dog were put in the Hound Group with the only other northern hunting dog in Uk, the Finnish Spitz. Ours too are uncommon though have a long history ion this country!
- By Tracy.M [gb] Date 15.03.02 10:58 UTC
Hi Brainless

Were they your Elkhounds in discover dogs at crufts, my neice and I thought they were great, perhaps one day when I have more time and less labs they will be my next breed to own (or be owned by).
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.03.02 21:02 UTC
Yep if you were there on Sunday, there were 3 generations of my breeding, and my friends half sister (same Dad) to the oldest of them!

I left the oldest girl who was 10 yesterday at home, as 4 was enough to go in my friends car! The oldest of my 3 is a Discover dogs veteran having done it 3 or is it 4 times now. Two years ago she did it on her own, with just a notice of whereour ring was, while I was showing her daughters, we then came back and joined her!

I had one lady remeber her from two years ago by name, she has a choc lab, and is having a puppy of our breed soon! should be good as she has waited thislong!
