I lost my dog last week to cancer and sometime in the near future want to get another dog. My fiance won't let me get another cross breed, so the choice is between a chocolate lab or a rotweiller. My concern with a rotweiller is shere strength and what are they like around very young children as I would like to start a family in the next year or so.
I would like to hear from owners of both breeds to tell me the good and bad points of each breed. Books don't really tell you very much and I would like to hear personal experinces.
Thanks
Sarah

i dont own either of theses breeds, but a friend has a rottie, she is a fab dog, loves everyone, she is great with kids,i would get a female, simply because they are that bit smaller, and not so strongwilled. but make sure you go to agood breeder, whatever you go for

Hi Guest, in the right hands and under the right circumstances, Labrador Retrievers are wonderful dogs. They require a high level of mental stimulation, lots of attention and human company. Without these things, they can be destructive in the extreme. My advice would be, never leave a Labrador with time on it's hands, remember the devil makes work!

If you have an active, outdoors type of family, where the dog would be involved in almost everything you do, and there is a fit active person at home all day, then you may be OK, but be prepared for anything. Every Lab family has a horror story, and they're all true.

Labradors are boistrous, playful, energetic, very loyal and loving, and highly intelligent requiring a lot of mental stimulation.  Without the correct and proper training, this only needs to be 5mins perhaps 4 or 5 times a day, a Labrador puppy can, and if left there own devises, will be completely destructive.

The teenage stage, which last last anywhere between 8months and 3 years can be a nightmare.

Good training classes, consistency and the back up a good and reputable breeder can and does make owning a Labrador a joy.

I Have 7 of these wonderful dogs

It would have been easier and quicker to place this link to that thread.  Guest this is very interesting and would probably help in your understanding of Labs.                                                           [link]http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?pid=442274;hlm=and;hl=labradors#442274[/link]

I have just read through that link... pretty scary. If I go for a Lab, maybe a rescue one, not sure that I am quite prepared for that puppy stage. I am so used to the quiet dog that wants affection, but he never destroyed the house or belongings. I shall think about this a little bit more.
Thanks

A rottweiler is a loyal family dog who adores doing things with you, they are easy to train
not really yappy dogs,on the down side they arent elegant and like to go through things rather than round,
you will get people pickup dogs and kids, cross roads etc because its a rottie.

Go for a breeder who breeds for temprement from hip scored parents.
Can you go Crufts on Sunday as we are there with our doggys and you can see
300+ rotties.

If you need any more advice on rottweilers feel free to email me,I have no puppies to sell
though.

Although I don't own either of these breeds, what I have seen of them is the are both strong willed, they are both physically strong, they are both the most stupid, can be docile things!  and seem to be good with children.  If you can get to crufts this weekend (thurs - sun) and go round discover dogs, talk to both rottie and lab owners but also maybe look at other breeds aswell, all breeds will be on the discover dogs so you could find something else maybe you would like to consider.  If you can it's always worth going to look,

Good luck

<<<<<<<<<discover dogs, talk to both rottie>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Mmmmmmmmmm, if the one that was on Discover dogs last year is on this year, I wouldnt bother. She did no justice to the breed at all, and said she wouldnt trust any Rottie. If I hadnt known Rotties and known dogs I would have been scared of going any where near one let alone getting one :S

Thanks for that advice. I am just doing my research first, I want to be totally prepared for this breed. Its like being back at school and doing my homework.

BTW I hasten to add, I love Rotties, I have a Rottie cross, and my BF has a Full Rottie. My next dog will be a Rottie, but that wont be until after a loose Gemma, or move to a bigger house!!!!!
You just need to research the breed and make sure you go to reputable breeders that breed first and formost for temprement.
